Makes a parent worry about letting their kids run unsupervised outdoors.
A citation to the owner is not adequate punishment IMO. Should carry the same punishment as if you hurt someone by driving drunk, or recklessly shoot someone.

Had an encounter with a Great Dane that was running with 2 other dogs a few years back. I shot a .357 round in front of him and they ran off. I wasn't hurt, but had I not been armed, it might have turned out differently.
I most always carry my S&W 357 when in the woods.

ALWAYS carry a gun, side arm or rifle, while in the woods for whatever activity. That's been my personal policy for years.

That's creepy and one reason why I don't get bent out of shape when someone talks about shooting a stray dog running loose. Most dogs left loose to run will never get that bad, but it doesn't take much for them to become deer chasers and trouble to livestock, particularly when paired up with another dog or two.

When i was a young fella in my early teens it was not uncommon to see packs of wild dogs, always made me nervous for myself and my coon hounds, I was running hounds on my own when I was 11-12 years old.

When I was younger, there were rental cabins here at the local lake. When it came time for the kids to go back to school and the renters left, many times they'd just leave the dogs to fend for themselves. I was with a buddy that was a few years older than I was chasing quail and he shot a German Shepard in the face with a load of birdshot that was approaching us with lip raised, showing it's teeth and growling. Seeing packs of dogs chasing deer in September and October was common. So was people driving around and shooting groundhogs. By November the dogs weren't around any more.
