There have been several segments on the local (Louisville) news about coffee shop workers voting to unionize. I find this both amusing and somewhat irritating. Just what in the world do they think they deserve four pouring coffee and mixing fufu drinks?
Unless I missed something along the way in my 49 years, part-time jobs are primarily meant for students, second jobs, supplemental income, etc. At no point in time have I ever been given the impression that said jobs are careers that are intended to provide a primary income and support a family. Am I wrong?
My neighbor is a silent partner in a few semi-fast food restaurants. He has told me several time that the "flip-o-matic" is ready and waiting to replace fast food workers. According to him, labor is by far the biggest cost for restaurant owners. Sooner or later escalating labor costs will make fast food restaurants too costly for average consumers. He said that eventually fast food outlets will have a manager on duty to supervise the automation and that's it. No teenagers making $15/hr to flip and fry.

There is lots and lots of people making a career out of fast food. Mainly because that's all they WANT to do.

I've been saying since this all started that they are going to price themselves out of a job. High wage "temporary" jobs are not the wave of the future, automation and robotics are. Everything that's going on with labor now is going to hasten that process.

Everything that's going on with labor now is going to hasten that process. I worked in the automation controls field for 3 decades. Automation will run and produce the majority of products. When the energy becomes fully available and low cost it will take off. The old invented renewed energy technologies are now released from the big oil prisons. This nearly free clean energy will change the world.

We are long ways from automation completely taking over in the fast food business…. Maybe someday way way down the road until then labor costs will be passed on to the consumer.
Folks will either pay or make it their self….

A company has to be competitive to retain both customers and employees. Without customers there are no need for employees. Without employees there are no customers.
Supply and demand is real. In today's inflation rates and everyone has to scratch to find more. Couple that with a shrinking workforce, we will continue to see increasing wages and drive for new innovations to keep the share holders and owners making money.
Business is business and negotiating wages with a union is one method used by many to shift some influence their way. Shouldn't matter what skill level or intent of that job is in my opinion.

Folks will either pay or make it their self…. 100% in both cases. I see it with my kids. My parents saw it with me and my generation. Etc... The "normal" is always changing. My grandparents would freak out people buying water for $1/bottle. Or $1/gallon. I freak out when I see what subway is charging for a lunch meat sandwich. Where'd the $5 footlong go?

I refuse to pay $3.00 to $4.00 for a cup of coffee at a Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts or you name it. I even hate it when my kids want any of that junk. I only would ever consider this when we’re on vacation or away from home, and now I do without. The best coffee in the world comes from my own pot in the kitchen for about 14 cents a pot. I know it’s popular, but I can’t stand it. Go ahead and form your union, no matter to me.
