After this morning’s incident, I’m reminded how important it is for us to lead, guide, instruct and pray for the youth of today.
Unfortunately, my week of vacation has turned into mostly a working vacation. Currently heading to work the powerhouse Water system at Ohio State.
But I saw something play out at the hotel breakfast that was pretty cool.
What turned out to be a single mom, was down at breakfast with her little toddler that was literally creating havoc through the area.
I mean, mom, just let the kid run everywhere, throwing oranges, eating bananas without taking the peels off, throwing tantrums.
Well, you get the picture.
And the dozen or so of us sitting around just watched like monkeys on a tree doing nothing.
Yes, that includes me. Although I was seething inside. But in today’s society, a guy is reluctant to do much for fear of the consequences and ramifications.
And then grandma sitting nearby with her husband decides to intervene.
She called the toddler over and pulled out some kind of toy in her purse and set the little kid on her lap. Then she told the single mom, having heard a little bit of her story to get her breakfast while she entertained the toddler.
At one point, the toddler squirmed and tried to break free to run around, like a hamster out of its cage.
Grandma held tight and distracted the child again, only this time firmly setting the kid down and saying, No. You sit right here.
That kid looked up at the Grandma as though it had never heard that word before.
This happened a couple more times, and Grandma would not give up. Every single time the toddler settled back down.
And then grandma sat and gave the mother some lessons in raising kids. Mostly, she said
“honey, it is not your job to please this kid and let it run while doing whatever it wants there’s a reason we call it raising and training up a child. You’ve got to remember that you are the boss, not the kid.
Unfortunately, in today’s society, people just don’t understand that it is OK to say no. You have the right and the responsibility to raise your kids the best you know how. But one of the hardest things for a mother to do is to tell a child no.
And one of the most important things you need to understand it is your duty at times to tell your child NO!”
I thought to myself as I headed to my room, God bless you, grandma!
