Please God don't let this be a trend.
The suffering that could be caused is beyond imagination.
I, for one favor shooting on sight for those caught doing this.
We are so vulnerable...

How long until liberals find a way to blame this on climate change/big oil?

How long until liberals find a way to blame this on climate change/big oil? Or use it for yet another accuse to try and take out firearms.

Its scary, this stuff, Texas last year, etc shows how vulnerable our grid is.
There have been government funded studies that show if we have a large solar flare or an emp is detonated in the right spot it could knock out our grids for years.
Our grid isn't hardened enough and we don't have sufficient replacement parts.

Period...

Re: the solar flare. How long has this been known, and why hasn't the system been hardened against it? I agree with all the other comments, but I think hanging is too good for them.

The people doing this are terrorists and when they are caught they should tried and hanged. Period... No one will get caught. Correction, no one of significance will get caught. Like most all of the other extremists groups, some idiot that thinks he's in charge will emerge as the problem but the person funneling the money and pulling the strings will just slide over to the strings of a group on the other side of issue.

I believe the study was done around 10 years ago, 2 senators testified to a senate sub committee on the findings. The study I believe stated that due to complications from the event (food, health, sanitation, heat, cold, etc) that 90% of the US population could die within 12 months. As for why it's not fixed, I have no idea whatsoever, all I know is our government is broken.

As a former utility worker, I have a lot of insight on this topic. You can only do so much, and mother nature is more of a threat than terrorism. Terrorism would have to be coordinated over a large area, an ice storm can do an incredible amount of damage in a short period of time. In March of 1992, we had a freak ice storm that took down a lot of distribution lines, but the most severe damage that I personally witnessed were the 110 high voltage towers, 765kv, that were destroyed from the weight of the ice. Those took months to replace before that transmission line could be restored to service. AEP is doing a good job of updating it's T&D infrastructure and hardening their critical substations. Duke Energy, not so much. The EMP scenario is a no win situation for anyone. The first country that pops a nuke is going to get nuked back, and it will be a domino affect after that. Which is why we invested heavily in ballistic missle submarines that are always out there somewhere to give us nuclear strike capabilty at all times. Now they have converted 4 Ohio class submarines to SSGN's that can carry 154 Tomahawk cruise missles that are in verticle launch tubes. If they so choose these all can be nuclear capable with a range of 1500 miles, so that is a lot of firepower! An EMP will not affect a submerged submarine.

I was talking to my parents one day years ago and said what a good thing substations hadn't seriously come up the terrorist board meeting.
Think of the damage 20 guys could do spread out in critical zones. especially in cold weather like we had last week--or as more of a distraction or prelude to something worse.
While I think the terrorism danger is very real, I worry more about the same thing that happens with school shootings-- when you see one, every aggrieved nut gets an idea and then you see a bunch more in a short span. Think of how many crazies drive by a substation, often right off the road, every day.

Could you imagine the damage a bit of tannerite could do at one of the many rural pressure stations for all the gas transmission lines?
