A nice Jack O'Connor tribute rifle would be awesome. But that could wait. There is ammo out there but you may just have to bite the bullet and spend some $s. Ask the seller if he has any.

.270 has the power but don’t be surprised by lack of blood trail!
Power point or Core-Lokt are good options!

I say it will be almost the same …. But you never know depending on the shot! Anything in the boiler room will kill the deer. Find it maybe different.

Was the guy left-handed? Strange sling attachment placement.

I'm not a fan of the aftermarket stock, but if it shoots well who cares. Or you could put the factory stock back on it and sell the Boyds stock on Ebay.
Based on the fact that you traded a single shot rifle for this (and you received two stocks for it) I'd say you did well on the trade.
Good luck with it this season.

We had a trade last year and he came out pretty good on that deal. I'd say he is returning the favor this time. We've been friends for a while.

Huge .270 Win fan here. I think that is just about the ideal deer caliber, plus a very flat shooter that will give you some range. With good shot placement, blood trailing won't be an issue. That after market stock is butt ugly, plus I'll bet its a bit heavier than the original. I'd consider going to an outfit like Boyds and restocking it with a nice walnut stock.
Read up a bit on Jack O'Conner. He was a big time shooting and big game hunting magazine writer back in the 60's & 70's. He really liked the .270 and took lots of game with it. Read all his stuff as a kid, first trip to Alaska I bought and set up a pre 64' Winchester model 70, .270, walnut stock with a Weaver K6 fixed power scope and shot a Dall ram with it.

What is a Jack O'Conner tribute rifle? He was the Gun Editor for OUTDOOR LIFE magizine. Think the classic sporter rifle. No engraving useful checkering, sling and a good scope. Walnut and blued steel. A good write up here with pics of some of his rifles. www.outdoorlife.com/jack-oconnors-perfect-model-70/He and Elmer Keith ( father of the .357 and .44 mags) had ongoing feud over rifle calibers. Jack's was that you did not need Elephant Rifles for big game and Keith thought the .458 Win mag was light for whitetail.

On a stand or even walking it makes for a handy carry. You carry with the butt up across your chest. Sling over right shoulder and under the left arm. Most of these slings have a quick adjust feature. You have probably seen the pics where the soldiers have their carried that way. The pistol grip would be handier.

Winchester model 70 the Riflemans Rifle. A walnut stock would look good.

I've got a 270 with a maple stock and it's beautiful - wood, but not what you usually see. Also have a walnut model 70 in a different caliber, and the weight/balance is perfect. I was at Sportsmans Warehouse south of Indy yesterday and they had about 8-10 brands of .270 in 130gr.
