I think my water heater has died. Water leaking out the bottom. It's a gas model 50 gallon power vent. I called a place here in Lafayette and they said $2,800. Is that typical?

I hate plumbing and gas work makes me nervous but if you have ANY handyman knowledge at all I'll bet you can do it and save a bunch of money Flexible gas line is your friend, that and shark bite plumbing connectors.

Offer them 1k of primers and 4lb of powder of their choosing.
I replaced my electric WH and well pressure tank for a lot less 4 years ago. I got a Water conditioner at cost and put it in at the same time. Thanks to my Dad for being patient with me while teaching me to solder.
Probably about right for having it installed.
We made a plug installation and feeder for STATES ENGINEERING years ago. They put some sort of pellets in it and ran it through an induction heater that turned them coating the insides. I do not have anymore info on them.

Ask around if anybody does side jobs. Find a plumber or handyman (that knows what their doing) that you can have do it or you help them to save a few bucks.

Have tankless water heaters fallen out of favor?

I had an electric water heater replaced last year. He had to do some extra piping as my geothermal ac/furnace helps heat water. I’m thinking I paid $1,400.
This was with Bayer Plumbing

Maybe it's a good time to look at a tankless on demand hot water heater. I have had one now for approx. 22 years, all the the hot water you want 24/7. I have a Bosch.

I found a propane closeout at Lowes a couple years ago. Don't remember exactly what it cost but it was under $500.

You have done well with that unit. We installed a lot of tankless water heaters in locations where we didn't have space for a tank type or where a long way from the main tank water heater. Had lots of problems, most didn't last very long.

Dang...we all need a raise. I bought and replaced mine probably 10 yrs ago. It was probably $300ish. If the utilities are already run the install is typically pretty easy.

It really showed up in a lower energy bill when I first installed it. I did it all myself. It's a natural gas unit.
