This is at a friend of mine’s home about 3/4 mile from my hunting area. First one we’ve ever seen in that area. The Eagle hit a pond in his backyard and nailed a big catfish. His prey ..

Making a presence in the NW now.
Cool to see, bad in his case with the fish. Rather see it make a meal out of the whole thing and not just gut it as said.

What the catfish had been eating probably tasted better then the fish itself…. No surprise there! They are not picky. St Pat's county park near South Bend has a camera on an eagles nest. We have seen turtles, snakes, deer, raccoon, fish, beaver, squirrels, and rabbits so far. I thought like a hawk, they only kill their prey and eat fresh. Absolutely false! They eat roadkill, deer guts, and deer carcasses from my yard and our road. Seen it many times.

So why do think it only ate the guts then?

So why do think it only ate the guts then? No idea. I'd think a fish is a fish? I like catfish as much as bluegill. Lol. Maybe it's a fed pond? Seeing what's in the guts of fed fish looks nasty, like dog food. Maybe they got a taste for that? I'll have esshup chime in with an answer or opinion.

Maybe it will come back for the rest later, if the coons, opossum, or yotes dont get it first?
Maybe it was too big to eat at once, or couldnt carry the whole thing away?

I saw one between Charlestown and Henryville last fall. It was eating something in a field about 50 yards off the county road. Neat to see, but it about caused a traffic pile-up.

We have a pair that are almost always present in a big sycamore tree just outside of town here. If you’re ever traveling down I-74 in Decatur County by the Honda plant…take a look in the big sycamore tree on the Honda property closet to the interstate. They’ll probably be up there!! Awesome sight!!

It might have started eating at the softer part of the fish and got scared off. Might come back, might not. They are more scavengers than predators, they will let an Osprey catch the fish then steal it from them vs. catching it themselves. Here's what Ben Franklin had to say about the Bald Eagle: In the letter, Franklin wrote that the “Bald Eagle...is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly…[he] is too lazy to fish for himself.”
About the turkey, Franklin wrote that in comparison to the bald eagle, the turkey is “a much more respectable Bird, and withal a true original Native of America...He is besides, though a little vain & silly, a Bird of Courage.” So although Benjamin Franklin defended the honor of the turkey against the bald eagle, he did not propose its becoming one of America’s most important symbols.
I have an Osprey that visits the pond here and I've also seen a mature Bald Eagle here too. I'd prefer either of them vs. the Great Blue Heron or Cormorants.

My brother's place has two bald eagles hanging around the past couple weeks. There are 3 lakes from 5.5 to 8.1 acres within a few miles from his 5.5 acre lake. The Ohio River is not that far away.

Almost a daily sight here near the Wabash River. There were a bunch of them hanging out in town when it was so cold that the only open water around was small areas of the river. The open water was loaded with ducks and geese. I suspect the eagles were snatching a few of the ducks.
