And they are predicting a sizable jump in property taxes due to the housing market going out of control due to building supply costs.

And they are predicting a sizable jump in property taxes due to the housing market going out of control due to building supply costs. My taxes went up this year the most they ever have almost 800 bucks in one year. The assessor apparently just came and redid it again I just received it in mail looks like it will increase again next year as they raised the value of my home. To me this has got to be one of the most unfair taxes they have So you have a decent home take care of it show pride increase value of homes around you and pay more, or you can rarely mow the yard have a take a part junk yard in the back with a house that should be torn down because you never fix anything and pay less, but you still get every service I get kids go to same school drive the same road no difference at all in any service Idk sure seems like a counter productive tax to me but most taxes seem that way to me anyway

I can hardly wait to see my property tax bill I'm a realtor and I have clients that ask me for property evaluations to fight the tax increase, but so far I haven't been able to overturn one. The market increased so much in the last 2 years that the tax increase is still under real value.

I believe it. 15 years ago I looked at doing that when we got an appraisal and bought our house, but it was already assessed less than the appraised value.

What happens when the housing market turns to crap here shortly and the real value drops?? I’ll guarantee they don’t drop assessments to match the values!! Once taxes get raised..seldom they drop as fast as they went up.

They re-classified it from farm to residential, I appealed and won but only because I had paperwork to support my claim that it was still a farm.

It's an end around to make up the lost revenue when the legislature capped the property tax rates.

Property taxes are what makes me understand why people live in certain places and also wonder why people live in other places.
Me thinks the poop and the fan blades will collide at a very high rate of speed when folks that have been buying/building at overinflated prices need to sell. I built houses for over 20 years and now do the grading, landscaping, etc. for new construction. I built a particular house in 2017 for (round numbers for conversation sake) $390k. I built the same floor plan in 2021, but on a less-desirable lot and lower-level finishes, for $675k. The houses are maybe 1/2 mile apart in the same neighborhood. When we get back to reality and the family that built for the higher price needs to sell, that's when the trouble will start. They WILL be upside down and unable to make up for the short sale. That's just one quick example.

Once taxes get raised..seldom they drop as fast as they went up. For the housing market to drop enough to matter we will need a massive increase in supply, which I don't see happening anytime soon. Low rates made it crazier but the root of the cause is the millennial generation getting into the market.

I have appealled before and won. Both on my house and another piece of property we own.
Last year I went with my Mom to a hearing to reduce the property tax/rent on an empty 5 acre field. The county reduced almost to the amount she requested. Hendricks County.
