This one was hard. We've been fighting a fungal infection for well over a year with him. Wednesday I had him in the house and seen in his eyes that he was done fighting. Called the vet to take him in on Thursday. Woke up Friday and he was gone.
For those that rabbit hunt, he was a pure rabbit dog. Absolute jump dog. If a rabbit was in a dozer pile and the other dogs were trying to find a way in, he was already digging a hole to get in. Drug him out many a brush pile and hole. Zero quit in him. No matter how tired he never gave up. If he barked, he was jumping the rabbit. Jumped the vast majority of rabbits he jumped. He'd lock on and wouldn't leave until the rabbit was dead or in a hole.
Never shed a tear over a dog but I'll admit I cried like a baby on this one. That dog gave me his all from day one and the best gift he could give me was leaving in his sleep. The trip to the vet would have destroyed me. Losing this one just took everything out of me as far as owning hounds.
R.I.P Buster

So sorry for you span. I know I’ve shed my share of tears over my bird dogs! Sure is a rough go for awhile! Cherish the memories!

Sorry to hear this. It sounds to me like you both have each other your all. Rest in the knowledge that you have Buster a good life. I've cried over dogs before and I will gladly admit that it will happen again.

Worse part of having a pet, is when they pass.

It's been 20 years since I had to put down my one Springer Reba and I still tear up when thinking about it. Dogs are great to have, the only problem is that they don't live long enough. My sincere condolences.

There is no way to describe the pain when a hunter loses his best friend and companion.
I love owning dogs but the pain that comes while you feel that dogs last breath is immeasurable. Sorry for the loss.

Worse part of having a pet, is when they pass. Yes it is, but being a houndsman myself I know what Span is going through, and what this dog meant to him. These dogs are more than pets, dogs like this one are specialist. We not only love them as a pet, but for what they were, knowing they were one of the few. I've seen more dogs come and go in my life then a large percentage of people but some stood out, some I never even considered a "pet", they were a beloved tool/machine that had one purpose in life, be the best they could, give 110% every single time, go above and beyond to get the job done. I feel the reason I shed a tear over those hounds is out of respect more than love. R.I.P, may you run daily in the happy hunting grounds and run shoulder to shoulder with the many greats from our past. Sorry for your loss brother!

I never considered to aspect of shedding a tear out of respect more than love. Don't get me wrong, the love I had for this one is immense, but the respect I had for him is another thing. As you know, these like this are once in a lifetime for most and knowing that he won't be there anymore is hardening. Thanks for the kind words.

Losing a pet is never easy... Some pets that we own are harder to lose than others. IOW - Some are very special to us. My condolences and prayers for peace for you.

Sorry for your loss. Something special about a bond between a man and his dog.
