I stopped by BassPro yesterday and in the racks was an 870 shotgun.
Initially, I wasn't sure if it was a "new, old stock" gun (built from older Remington parts) or a new model from Remarms. I asked the guy behind the counter to look @ it and immediately could tell it was the new "Fieldmaster" 870. It comes with a walnut stock and forend, is drilled and tapped for scope mounting, has sling swivels, three choke tubes (ic, modified and full) and appears by all accounts to be a much better version of the 870 than the express models ever were.
The finish on the barrel and receiver is better than the express, but it's hardly the deep bluing of the Wingmasters. Having said that, it appears to be an improvement over the express finish and hopefully it will hold up better with use. The walnut furniture was finished with a matte finish that appeared to be a much better finish than what was used on the express models wood stocks.
The one thing that is very reminiscent of the old 870 Wingmasters was the action. It was smooth as silk with very little side to side play in the forend. I've read that back in the day, the 870 internals were polished twice and the express models only once. It appears RemArms went back to polishing the internals twice based on the gun I handled.
All in all, I think the new Fieldmaster (while not a Wingmaster) is a huge step up from the express and is well worth a look for someone thinking about purchasing a new pump gun for field use.
BTW, it retails for $499.00.

That's good to hear. I learned my lesson with an Ithaca Deerslayer II. Having a scope mounted on the receiver and NOT having a fixed barrel does not make for accurate shooting with slugs. It's better to have a cantilever mount so the scope and barrel are a single unit.

We are selling them for $425 at Scheels.....I would caution anyone thinking about it to remember that there were reasons that Remington went bankrupt and Remarms now employs some of the very same upper echelon folks. After what became of the Remington products the last 10 years I hold on for at least a couple of model years to see if QC is where is should be. BTW, for the same money (or less) you can swing a Benelli Nova or Super.....food for thought

I never believe the gun reviews.
When a reviewer says "My pattern work later revealed that the 870 put more pellets inside the 30-inch circle at 30 yards with a modified choke than it did with an IC."
Well, duh, that's what it's supposed to do you idiot.
