I’m tossing between applying for IPLA or FWA. Did a quail hunt on an IPLA property and I was very impressed with the landowners help to find birds.

This is my first time applying, can you tell me what the difference is and how it works? You will need your turkey license to apply for the draw+. I am not sure of the IPLA. The draw will be on the DNR website. To see the hunts I think you will need to start the process. Also do not start and quit the app process. Select the area you want to hunt. Select the days you want to hunt. I like the 3 day hunts. Submit the app. Sit back and wait for the draw. If drawn on an area that does no show hunts you will need to be there before a certain time. It is my opinion you have a duty to show for the hunt. The only reason not to is if you already have your gobbler. You are taking a spot that someone else may have been happy to have. You can't hunt all day, quitting time is 1:00 PM.

DNR has some incentives for these people that I’m not completely aware of. I think it’s public information though on what they receive for participation. My friend was picked for quail a couple years ago and the landowner was exceptionally helpful in locating birds for us. Obviously everyone is different so no saying how the landowner will be. I believe it was known as APPLE before and now it’s IPLA.

Illinois has a similar land owner program. My grandson from Chicago was drawn in it and bowhunted a piece of property. He saw some nice deer but just couldn’t close the deal on one. Being very personable like his grandpa he got in good with the landowner. The landowner told him to come back and hunt any time he wanted to.
