Does the vet know why that happened? 2 failed breedings/litters might make me think it's her.......

Hunter Max - yes, I have heard that before, and every word rings true. I’m not a full time farmer, this is more of a hobby now. My dad farmed, and I helped him till around 32 years old. I decided that I was gonna watch kids play ballgames and such rather than continue farming. We never did livestock, only grain. But these pigs are still kind of a way to scratch itch, it doesn’t go away.
Welder - this York was always bound for the butcher or sale barn, not a great pig structurally. I have some one to buy her, just have to find a spot at the processor, which is probably not going to be quick. Of course, she is recovering well and may nurse some Duroc runts!
Esshup - the pig that had stillborns (the York) was a gilt, meaning first time mama. The Duroc was a gilt too. I’m told that gilts are far more difficult to breed and farrow, and of course you never know how they will act with their young.
As an update, that Duroc would not eat or drink in that crate. She hated it. She probably ate a total of 4 pounds of food since last Saturday. I had to water her by sticking a hose in her mouth. She’s been crates since last Sunday, gave birth Thursday night. If she won’t eat and/or drink, no milk, everything dies. I had been talking with a friend about putting her in a pen with a safe place for the pigs, and agreed that may be an option. He has done this for I don’t know how many years and is farrowing 13 pigs right now. So this evening I did move her out of the crate to a pen, and she ate ate and drank immediately on her own. I think she said “thanks”.

Mama duroc’s new home, and her kids.

I know the crate is to keep them from laying on or otherwise hurting the piglets, but really didn’t have any other options with mama not eating.

Here’s the piglets doing what they do best in their new home. Oh yeah, Featherduster - I did give her a kiss after she started eating and drinking.

marshallco:
I talked to a customer that was farrowing 300/week. He said that you need to check with the vet. The hogs could have caught a disease and that's why he thinks why they have had problems producing. He said they'd never, ever keep one that needed a C-section. Way too much $$ spent on doing one. He said they'd kill momma, get the babies out and stick them with other nursing pigs. He said if they caught a disease (he named 3-4 of them), he said they might only be off of food for one day (maybe) while they were pregnant and that would be the only sign that they weren't going to have a good litter.
His advice was to get rid of both of them and start over. He said once a c-section, usually that is every birth after that.

Esshup - that's lot of pigs! I have been in contact with the vet, he doesn't seem overly concerned at this point. Both pigs have been given antibiotics which should deal with a fair amount of illness/disease. I also gave them a preventative medication before their due dates for the same thing. Of course, it could be some kind of disease or illness, but the vet sure didn't lean that way. The C section pig is definitely headed to the sale barn or the butcher, she was gonna get there after this at any rate. The C section just confirmed that. It's the Duroc that I would really like to hang on to, she's back to not eating as much yesterday and today. If she doesn't recover pretty soon, it looks like I will be starting from scratch again next year.

marshallco, I will talk to my customer again and write down the diseases he mentioned. Before he sold the business to his brother they were moving around 200,000 piglets per year. I think one of the diseases he mentioned was a form of rabies.

I know, this thread is worthless without pics. I will get some around in the next day or so. We have a pretty decent bunch of durocs that we farrowed, fair is in a little less than 3 weeks. We also picked up a good spot and Poland, and a cross gilt for anothe to breed for next year. and company for the Duroc sow, who is doing just fine now.. That Duroc sow is about 500 lbs, 17 months old. Still amazes me, but really no big deal in the grand scheme of things.

This is our best Duroc barrow from our litter, weighs about 280 now. 295 is the max, 1 week to go, so he’s been on a diet.

White one is a cross gilt, she gets to stay and get bred for more fun next year. The other is our Duroc gilt, best pig from our litter, weighs about 285 now. No weight limit for gilts.

Cross barrow on the right, so-so pig but he will eat fine. Left is a spot, looked good till he tweaked his leg 2 nights ago, hopefully he will come out of that, can’t see any serious signs of injury.

A lot better than the $1.09 futures that I heard on the radio today.
