Still Waiting on this duroc to go. Have given her an inducement drug per the vet, no response yet, but it does say to expect results within 30 hours. So I'm not quite there yet. This is almost as bad as waiting for my own kids to be born! At least then I could talk with the expectant mother and the Doc. Duroc doesn't say much. Anytime a pregnant female doesn't say much it usually means trouble! Come to think of it, that goes for all of them pregnant or not!

Glory to the lord! We had 9 from this Duroc, 3 gilts and 6 barrows!! Every single one was born alive, no still births! I had to go in and pull 2, after a call to the vet. Most thankful!

Update - the Duroc spit out a stillborn around noon today, and some more afterbirth. My one buddy warned me that would happen with durocs, but I forgot until then.
Today is the due date for the York, she is being induced as well right now. Hopefully more good news later tonight or tomorrow. She doesn’t show a lot of progress yet though, but we will see….

Not trying to be disgusting, but I would prefer to smell a gut-shot found the next afternoon deer any day over rotten afterbirth! Unless you have smelled it, you can't imagine, lol.

Welder - you are exactly right. Keep in mind I’m a rookie at this, and haven’t gotten much sleep in the last 3 nights, but I did almost did lose my cookies today at noon pulling out the rest of that afterbirth. It is a special kind of stink!

Well, congrats!! You are getting your feet wet so to speak, now hopefully round two will happen quickly.
A customer of mine was a pig farmer, he retired and sold the business. He was raising them to around 40# then selling them to someone else to finish. I think he was birthing around 220,000 piggies a year.

I’ve smelled some nasty things growing up on a farm and butchering everything by far the worst has got to be boiled chicken.
That smell has stayed with me for 45 years I know what your talking about but dump a duck chicken or turkey in 50 gallons of hot water in cast iron pot over a fire is a smell you’ll never forget.

I worked for a friend of mine a few years after high school. 2nd week of July,1990,his farrowing house burned down. 20 sows,20 litters of pigs and around 200 weaned nursery pigs partially burned and fell into the manure pit. It was a "community effort" cleaning up the next day. I will NEVER forget that smell. YUCK!

Mostly bailing hay and detasseling corn mixed with some time on a diary farm, I didn't mess too much with the cows, mostly concentrated on silage harvest and picking up straw and hay. What do you mean by "partially burned"? Is that a reference to neutering or maybe branding? I've seen swine at the county fair but that's as much time as I've spent with a live pig.

Well, we had the vet visit us twice today. First time he did an ultrasound and thought we had viable pigs. Said let them keep cooking. Came back about 6 hours later, no progress with the pig so he did a C section. There were 7 pigs, all stillborn. I know this is part of doing this, but still stinks. No fault of the vet, he was a professional throughout. Regardless, we’re still plenty blessed to have the litter we do, they seem fine, except we need mama to eat and drink on her own. God is STILL good’

That's rough, been there, done that! My suggestion would be get her healthy and antibiotic free and have her made into whole-hog sausage. She's a big animal and still young. Ask the vet and see what he says. You should easily get 200# of sausage and sell it for $2-$3 per pound and recoup some of your loss.
