Back in the late 80's or early 90's The National Hemi owners Association had Dick Landy come to our Hemi Owners national meet as a guest speaker.
The conference room we had booked this appearance for was standing room only with a crowd out the door. The first thing Landy said is that the 426 Hemi was a dead mute issue and would never be in production again. The entire room sighed and began to question Landy as to why.
Landy pointed out that you can buy a 6 cylinder turbo charged factory street production car and whoop a 426 hemi in the 1/4 on it's best day and you you could do for a fraction of the cost.
LANDY was correct about that HOWEVER... fast forward to the 20's and Chrysler brought it back by manufacturing the hottest street production car and they did it with a 426 HEMI.
Chrysler might be shelving the HEMI powered cars for now but the 426 hemi crate motors will still be in high demand.
I believe that Chrysler will one day reintroduce the 426 HEMI powered cars once more.

In the mid 70s my future brother in law had a car junkyard. I was dating my soon to be wife and bought a 68 and 69 Superbee. The 69 was hit in the rear but had a 440 super commando motor which I put in the 68. My BIL had a 67-68 426 hemi that needed to be rebuilt that he was going to give to me but I told him to keep it as I didn’t have any money to rebuild it. Wish I had it now.

My guess is that it has as much to do with emissions compliance as anything else.

It's hard to beat the efficiency of a turbo 6. I was going to build an all motor car but rethinking a little with gas being so unpredictable. A lot of plumbing and parts with a turbo but they make free power and torque in spades.

i guess they won't fit in a world with a mandated 40 MPG. I had a 76 Olds 98 with the 455ci and a turbo 200 or 700 overdrive trans in it from a different car. It was the mechanical trans, no electronics yet. Anyway, with a 2.73 rear gear and overdrive, I was getting somewhere around 35mpg. It was barely above idle when cruising down the road.
