I made this setup after an idea from a youtube video, and a lot of thinking. It started as a 40gal water tank. The concept is air draws in from underneath, thru a burn pot, into a diverter hat that makes a swirl or vortex. Oil is metered in, and it will run 800deg on a pencil lead thickness of oil stream. It's incredible. You light it off a splash of diesel fuel, then start the oil once the temp builds. I started with a cheap box fan blowing air thru the heat exchanger tubes, and it did pretty good. Yesterday I whipped up an air box and remote fan down low so the flow would be better and no fear of the fan ever getting hot. Last night I raised my garage temp almost 40 degrees in a couple hours! Here's how hot it will run. Just amazing that's off a small stream of oil. Obviously you wouldn't want to run it like this very much. Just showing what the potential is. For a reservoir, I used a propane tank flipped over and top cut open. The feed is out the side so any contaminates in the oil settle to the bottom. The oil stream is so fine, it doesn't take much to impede the flow. I cut a v notch in the gate valve to help the stream flow straighter. I have since added a filter bowl so the oil is cleaner. The old oxygen tank is only used as a stand for the propane tank reservoir. I am not a sheetmetal tinner. My buddy is tho. So he got me some pieces and a plan to build something. The 10" is not crooked like the pic seems. Its shaped into an oval for clearance. Turned out pretty good for a newby. This is my upgraded filter setup. The actual element is out, so we use it as a sediment bowl. The flow is so light, when any junk enters the housing it sinks to the bottom. I do strain the oil thru a window screen when pouring into the resevoir first.

Looks cool. How is the oil delivered?

That’s a heckuva creation you got there. Seems like it’ll do the job.

That’s a heckuva creation you got there. Seems like it’ll do the job. Best of all, heating for free. I started off with diesel drain oil, but it is so nasty and burns less clean and efficient, I tried veggie and it's better in many ways. My buddy runs his car on it, and built an oil burner himself now. He has verbal contracts with several restaurants, and built them tanks to hold it, and a vacuum tank to recover it. He has over 3k gallons on hand now. He begs me to come take some, so it's a no brainer. A totally renewable resource. He refines his with a centrifuge and filters, plus heating to remove moisture for the stuff he runs in the car. We got quite the racket going on now. 😎

He was trying to use a small copper pipe for dripping the oil in but couldn't get it to flow good enough.

He was trying to use a small copper pipe for dripping the oil in but couldn't get it to flow good enough. I have had a few different setups now. The problem with the copper tube and a needle valve is the diameter is so small, and there is no way to vent it, so it causes a vacuum to hold the oil. Been there and done that. The remedy is black pipe, with a tee and a hole drilled in the back so you can see the stream of oil thru it. The tee is open and the pipe is half inch diameter, so it allows airflow and no vacuum. Basically same principal as the vent pipe on your house plumbing. He will need more oil than a one car oil change. Typical burn times are roughly 4hrs per one gallon of oil. This is the stream it runs on. Just amazing.

2 questions, if you had to tally up the hours of fiddling with it from when you switched from wood to oil, how many hours do you have in it, and does your garage smell like a fast food BBQ place now? LOL

LOL Lol. I still cant smell from the Covid. But my buddies car does give off awesome results. As far as time invested... Hard to say exactly as I drank quite a few refreshments along the way. I am sure a lot of inventions were derived under similar circumstances. In reality, it is what it is. This is R&D. My first setup was way too large and found to be out of proportion for proper flow. Pretty much everything has been given to me or free, except black pipe and fittings. Being a one income family, I am always on a strict budget. It is both fun and rewarding finally getting results. The journey here was not always so fun, but what the hell is life if you are not challenged? I honestly have no complaints and my legacy will live on when I'm gone even if not with substantial monetary gains from ideas and inventions. I think Luke's progress has shown I have done my lifes work so far.

Lot of auto shops had waste oil burners back in the day could burn oil trany brake power steering fluid they were a bit expensive had In line filters to catch dirt and grease and then had a high pressure pump to break it back down before it was injected to the burner then the EPA got involved put a end to it for the most part
My buddy Steve that I fish with has his own shop he works on marine 4 wheeler Side by sides snowmobiles did something along the same lines heats his shop with all the oil he gets for free

Now to add on to the garage for a bigger workshop, put in some insulation and enjoy it!!!

I asked him about veggie oil last week and he claims it good if you can find good clean used....He stopped using it because the hassle of filtering it so much in order to use it. He claims you need high end restaurant oil for best results!

Waste oil burning is still very much legal and modernized. We have had Clean Burn furnaces in our shop for over 20 years. We just got 2 new ones last year and they are awesome. Once my new company tightened up our building newer doors and weather stripping, it's like working in an office now. Lol

Is the oil tank pressurized to move the oil. That is a real nice set up. You did a hell of job

Yes, exactly. Oxygen tank was old and had been open to element's. Only used as a stand to make a conversation piece.

deadeer I like your style, I like the heat exchanger concept . Here is the pic of the one I built for my son's barn a few years ago.
