In the Deer Hunting Rifle Question thread, you stated: "If the firearm is designed to be fired from the shoulder, it is a rifle. The firearm must have a barrel longer than 16 inches or have the appropriate ATF stamp."
The ATF says a rifle designed to be fired from the shoulder must have a minimum barrel length of 16" otherwise it must be registered as a SBR requiring a tax stamp. However, the ATF permits rifles to have barrels shorter than 16" if a muzzle device is installed, pinned and welded, bringing the total (barrel and muzzle device) length up to 16" without needing to be registered as a SBR.
1) Does Indiana law permit hunting with rifles designed to be fired from the shoulder with barrels that only measure 16" in length? Or do they need to be longer than 16" as you stated in the Deer Hunting Rifle Question thread?
2) Are rifles with barrels shorter than 16" permitted if they have pinned and welded muzzle devices that bring their total (barrel+muzzle device) length to the 16" minimum that meet the ATF definition for a legal (non-SBR) rifle?

My apologies. The intention of my response was to bring attention to the fact that certain rifles, based on barrel length, require additional items to be legal. I did not include the words "16 inches or". That was my mistake in wording. As the 16 inches or "longer than 16 inches" was directed at the requirement to have a stamp or not have a stamp from the ATF, the regulations established from the ATF would apply.
