My Dad and I will be in area 65 Saturday with our guns. I know not to expect much. I have been two other times and have yet to see a deer. My Dad might be the oldest hunting this weekend in there. He'll be 81 later this month. Still using his climbing stand.

Area 65 is a great area to be in. I’ve only been there once and have tried like a thousand times to get back. Hunted the fence line only to see 3 giants over the other side I couldn’t shoot. The cool thing about that area is you can get in way long before daylight and let things settle down and get out after dark and still make it to the office on time. Good luck. I did get drawn but think it’s that last gun hunt. Not sure if I’m gonna go though or not l, depends on my wife and my son tagging out.

A few of the deer harvested on Halloween 2021 at Big Oaks NWR! A total of 35 deer were harvested from 251 hunters........Believe that’s about 14% success rate!

I was told that they had to play the no shows by ear. They weren’t in October but were waiting on word about November.

BTW...
Because of the limits on the number viewing the safety briefing (maximum 30), it is important to view the safety video before the day of your hunt. The safety video and hunt briefing will be shown at the refuge office on public use days (Mondays and Fridays), hunt days, and on Thursdays beginning Friday October 1 (except when those days are a Federal Holiday, October 11 is a Federal Holiday and the refuge office will be closed). Safety briefings will be held every hour during the day once the refuge office opens. The office is open from 7:00 AM – 4:30 PM on public use days and from 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM on Thursdays. Hunt days the office is open from 5:30 AM – 8:00 PM during Eastern Daylight Savings and from 4:30 AM - 7:00 PM during Eastern Standard Time. Refuge Hunt Permits will be sold after each briefing. It is strongly encouraged that you attend one of these early safety briefings, it will prevent long delays on the initial day of your hunt allowing you to arrive at your hunting area up to 1-3 hours earlier than would otherwise be possible.
