Yesterday around noon a truck driver tells me at work there’s a buck laying on our retention pond dam. I go out to investigate and he wasn’t lying. A big buck. I got close enough to investigate but didn’t want to spook him. I noticed he was breathing hard and didn’t care that I was only 25 yards away. A couple times he just laid his whole head down. He was not well. He was about 100 yards off of highway 67, so I assume hit by a car and limped over to where he could rest. Thoughts??
He finally got up and I watched him walk through a small field, across a parking lot at a neighboring business, and into a small wood lot. He walked very gingerly, slow and with clear damage to his right side. He had a “guy shot” walk going on, flickering his tail every ten yards or so. At lunch I drove over to the business and talked to a guy that worked there and he agreed to walk me back to the wood lot to try to locate him, and call DNR. I was able to locate him bedded and not doing well still. I then called DNR and was told that an officer would call back and come check it out.
After I got back from lunch I noticed a few Mooresville police cars in that lot. I went and talked to an officer and he said the buck appeared to have a wound on his face. He said an officer was taking the head and that the meat was ruined from infection.
I was glad the deer wasn’t suffering any longer. He was really bad off. I was a little bummed the head was the only thing being taken. And selfishly, I was hoping I would be considered for that. But knew it was a long shot. I would’ve even offered to take the deer down to Little Bucks, as it’s only a couple miles north, for a donation.
Long story short, the buck was dispatched. They wouldn’t let me go take a couple pictures for some reason. But I did get some sent to me later in the day. I also have a couple of him laying on our dam. If anybody would offer to post them, I’ll email or text them to someone.
Beautiful buck, and a sad ending. I hope he gets shown off somewhere for a long time.

After being alive just a short time ago I call BS on who ever made the that decision! Sorry!

That is verbatim what I was told. Actually, when I walked up to the window, I asked, “are you guys handling the deer?” And without hesitation, I was told, “yes, and you can’t have it!” Fair enough, although I didn’t ask for it. I was just being curious. Or nosey if that’s how some see it. I wish he had been more understanding of the fact that I was genuinely curious. And that I was who called the buck in for someone to investigate and put down if necessary, which was very obvious.
That being said, I’m a Back the Blue guy. 100%. I’ll assume he had a rough shift and didn’t want to deal with a bunch of people asking questions.

When I was an LEO we had a list of folks who would come get roadkill. The rule was always that nobody got heads because there ARE some nefarious folks out there that would do stupid crap for a head. Also, some of the folks were down right aggressive about even the meat if it was salvageable (as in pulling up while another was field dressing and screaming about being "NEXT ON THE LIST!!!"). People get nuts around deer.....especially when antlers are involved.

And now it makes sense why folks were ignorant. Honestly love to see wanton waste charges filed. I got money the meat was salvageable - if hit by car usually only one side mashed. Someone just wanted the antlers period.

Those were some of my initial thoughts. But I had to be careful not to fall into the same trap of “wanting the antlers”. I was glad he wasn’t suffering. But through some investigating of my own, and not being allowed to go take pictures, I was very skeptical of what went on back in that wood lot. I also try to be careful assuming someone’s motives without concrete proof. But I would definitely like this to be followed up on and make sure.

Could be nothing or could be something.

Can always email IDNR Law side of things and then call. Email is nice because you have written record of exactly what you're reporting.

During my patrol days, we would also have a "deer kill" list. We'd issue them permits that we carry in our squads. I would never EVER let a person show up and just take the rack. They took the whole deer or nothing. Period. No questions asked.
I have a hard time believing they couldn't salvage a majority of that meat. Pitiful
