More than a thumping,I would say it is more like a hurtin. You will need some strong wrists for sure. I will say though,he loads to the max, many factory loads won’t be so much.

I’ve taken several with bows in my youth but joined the military at 19 and was overseas for 10 years. I recently retired and got back into hunting. I took a buck and a doe each with my Ruger American in 308 this year, so yesterday I picked up a 1961 Ruger Super Blackhawk in 44 mag and next year, that is all I plan to use.

I didn't take up deer hunting until Indiana legalized handguns for deer. I took several with my S&W 6-29, before I found bow hunting. when pistol cartridge rifles came along I was in my stand on opening morning of gun season with my Marlin 1894 .44 magnum carbine. I took a nice mature doe within five minutes of legal shooting lite that morning. Now, each year, from time to time, I will set my stand with my four inch S&W model 29. I took a good doe with it four or five years ago, so it's no virgin, but haven't had it with me when a good handgun shot presents itself lately. My gun season doe fell to my Marlin again this year, though it would have been a perfect handgun shot if I'd have had it along.

Never shot a deer with a handgun. Come to think of it, every deer I've shot was unarmed.

Picked up some 180 Speer Gold Dot a few months back to load for my Glock 23. Loaded up 5 with 5.6 grains of Universal Clays and 5 with 5.8 grains. Shot with a crude cardboard box rest at 50'. I believe I'll go with the 5.6 load. Need to scoot my adjustable sight over a bit. I plan to start carrying during all deer seasons and I will try it out during firearms season if a deer gets within 25 yards.
