My parents were contacted by a person claiming to be an Indiana State Trooper. He was asking questions regarding a legal issue involving my soon to be ex wife's son. He asked to speak to me and left his phone number. I had several phone conversations with the guy. He was asking for information on her son and his whereabouts. I gave him all the information that I had. At this time I thought it was a legit call. He knew facts about the case and his legal issues. The next call from him took a different tone and he informed me that I had been summoned to appear at a court hearing as a character witness and I had failed to appear. He informed me that since I hadn't shown up there was going to be 2 warrants issued for my arrest for failure to appear and another charge that I can't remember. Something about civil duty. Now normally I consider myself a fairly intelligent person but right now my life is so crazy and chaotic I'm barely keeping everything straight and I'm going on very little sleep. I should have realized this was a scam earlier than I did. The scammer told me if I paid the 2 bonds the arrest warrants would be put on hold and I would avoid being detained by law enforcement. I have never been in any legal trouble before. Some of his story was making sense with what is going on with my divorce and ex wife. I could see her not telling me about a court hearing with her son. When the scammer told me how to secure the bond payments my common sense finally kicked in and I realized something was up. I told him I wasn't going through with it and he informed me that the local police would be issued warrants for my arrest. Now this is all going on while I'm with my new girlfriend. I still wasn't sure what was true about this story. I had her drive and I laid low in the car until we got out of town. I turned my phone off so it couldn't be tracked. I hadn't done anything wrong but I didn't want to spend the weekend in jail until this was sorted out. While we were driving 2 cops turned and followed us for a while. It was just a coincidence but at the time we didn't know that. I contacted a relative who is in law enforcement and explained to him what was going on. He told me it was definitely a scam. I called the local police and told them about it. They confirmed that there were no warrants in my name.
Looking back at it I felt pretty stupid that I didn't realize it was a scam much earlier. The guy was American and sounded like he was a cop. He was very convincing and knew a lot of facts about the case. I think if this would have happened when my life was more normal I would have figured it out much quicker. I could see how this type of scam would work on a lot of people. I tried tracing the phone number but it didn't come up with any information. It was an Indianapolis area code. I blocked the number on my cell phone after he tried calling back and leaving a voice message. He tried calling my parents back a few times but I told them to ignore his calls. I sure wish I could run into this lowlife face to face. I would probably be facing some legit legal charges if I did.
