I received a call today from one of my long time colleagues in the water industry. We reminisced the day and our whereabouts on September 11th, 20 years ago! It’s hard to believe it’s been that long. I had just finished an early morning meeting in the powerhouse at the old Wishard Hospital where I was proposing a complete retrofit of their Dealkalizers that fed the Boilers. I was on my way to meet with Doctors on the upper floor to review the startup of a new NCCLS (as denoted then) Ultrapure central lab water system. As we greeted in the lobby area, the news broke on the TV of the first tower coming down. As we all sat there, stunned and confused, the meeting was postponed. It was eerily quiet. Such a surreal moment.

I was lifting weights at Dave's Gym in South Bend with a buddy. We both looked at each other and said somebodies gonna be paying dearly for this. We all watched in disbelief, and also remember the news channels reporting the Pentagon strike and Shanksville shortly after. Wondering what was next. What a sad day.

I was driving home from a long night shift. I turned on Bob & Tom and immediately noted a somber tone Tom says "Once again this is no joke, a SECOND plane has hit the World Center. " I knew something was greatly amiss and hurried to the house. A surreal day.

My wife and I were in bed asleep. Only 2.5 years into our marriage and I had been working the 10p-6a shift the evening prior. We were living with her parents at the time and her dad burst into the room to tell us. I cried and shook my head in disbelief as the towers fell. I knew what was coming. I knew what it meant for my family and friends who were enlisted. And the complete devastation for those still in the buildings and for their families who had to witness it. Pride and sorrow for those brave souls who took on the hijackers and foiled their plans.

That was a strange birthday.

I was at work and couldn't believe how quiet it seemed outside later on in the day. I guess that the planes flying make a lot of background noise that we never really pick up on.

I was a senior in high school. I had a hard time focusing the rest of the day. I've been working in public safety/Healthcare for the last 10 years. I suppose because of that I'm supposed to feel especially affected by this day every year, truth be told, I'm still the same ed off American I was 20 years ago.

I took the day off to take my daughter in for her 6 month old checkup. I was watching the news when they announced that a plane had hit the towers. The way they said it I thought they meant like a small Piper. I watched both towers come down and heard the news about the Pentagon and the crash in Pennsylvania.
Later that night there was only one plane in the night sky. The next I met my brother in Friendship. They really did not good coverage because of being in the valley.
So except for the first six months or my girls life she has not known of anything but war.

I was working for a custom automation builder for the big 3 automobile companies. We had a tv in the engineering office and turned it on at 1st word. We were all in shock watching. Glad I was not traveling that day. Engineering stopped that day.

09/11/2001 The day I turned 11 years old. Had just arrived at school as the news was breaking. That was a strange birthday. I was a junior. It was testing time and I had passed my GQE the prior year so we weren't doing any classwork. A kid came back in from the restroom and said the ladies at the front office said a plane hit the first tower. They had tvs in all the classrooms and once the second tower was hit IT relayed the news to all the tvs and we started watching.

I was working second shift and had just gotten up and I was feeding my 4 week old (now 20 year old baby girl). We turned on the TV literally a few seconds after the first plane hit. I remember thinking it didn't look that bad to me,put the fire out and do some repairs. Then, the second plane hit and the world was never the same.

It was a strange day, as so many here have said. We went fishing, because i was off work. Wife and i had JUST gotten back from our honeymoon in vegas. My brother, wifes friend, wife and me went to pastrick marina on lake michigan. I had caught a decent perch when a friend called and said the first tower got hit. Our friend had been known for talking mess before, so we were like whatever dude. Not too long after that, he called again, said a plane hit the other tower. We were like, man he talks a lot of b.s....but we were starting to get nervous. A dnr lady walked past us crying, and we were like, well...lets pull up the lines and get to a t.v. on the way home, there was NO ONE on the highway. My brother got on the phone in time to hear the the pentagon was attacked. We got home and turned on the tv just in time to see, awestruck and unbelieving, the towers fall. We all decided the only thing to do was donate blood at that point, but the only place open was 20 miles away. We cut a piece of cardboard and stuck it in our back window saying "God bless America, follow us to nearest blood donation center!" We figured it would be a rescue, as opposed to a recovery effort. We didnt know. On the way home after donating blood, i noticed a pair of f-16's flying CAP over Chicago. No other contrails in the sky. One of the most unusual days i've ever lived through. Hope we never have to see anything like that again. Joe Buckmaster

I was on my computer talking to my old hunting group Artemis when one of the members posted about the first airplane hitting the tower. I immediately turned on the TV and sat in disbelief as the days events unfolded.
My wife was in the back of the house and when she came in to the living room sh asked why I had the tv on so early. I just pointed at the screen. She looked at it and said “Oh my God”.
Unfortunately with the haphazard handling of Afghanistan we will see more of that. The Taliban, Al Queda and ISIS is in a lot better position now than they were 20 years ago.
We should have went in and kicked Al Queda’s butt, killed Osama Bin laden and left telling them if they ever attack us again we would turn Afghanistan into glass with nuclear bombs.

PS…
I find it sickening that Biden talks if “unity” when he has done more to divide this country than anyone ever has.

Was rubbing the loading ramp concrete walls at the new Super Walmart in Bemidji, MN that we were building. Probably 1 out of maybe 3 times we EVER had a radio playing while at work...we all set down on buckets and went into a somber stare.

That day was cemented into so many memories. Like the day JFK was shot, for those of us white whiskers.
I was finishing packing my gear for a bowhunting trip to North Dakota with a hunting buddy, and the wife was finishing getting ready for a trip to the airport in about an hour to fly to NYC and then join my dad and his lady friend for a flight to Europe and a vacation cruise in the Mediterranean.
The phone rang, and it was our son. He asked if his mom was on her way yet and when I said she was just about to leave, he said she should turn on the TV first, as her plans would almost surely be changing.
My pal and I went ahead with our scheduled hut a couple days later, but it was all ground travel. Only really noticeable difference in our trip was the presence of the flag on every available flagpole along the way and even on every table in the diners at when we got to ND. The ones on the tables were made in China, but it's the thought that counts.
Another bowhunter friend, I found out later, was in Alaska with his wife on a fly-in remote bowhunt for moose and were anxiously awaiting their scheduled pickup, as he had been successful in taking nice bull with his recurve a day or so earlier and there were grizzly tracks pretty close to their camp. When the plane was late, they were VERY concerned. The pilot explained that he had been frantically calling every official that he could reach and had finally gotten the OK to fly them back to civilization.

Working for IDEM. Loading the truck for the week. Listened to radio entire trip to Angola. Watched gas prices sky rocket.
Next morning at breakfast there was a reunion of ww2 vets. An older lady walked up to my work partner, who was a Vietnam vet, and said, OK boys. We stood up last attack, what are you guys going to do?
It was a great question.
