Last week, DNR confirmed the body of a black bear north of Bristol in Elkhart County. Preliminary results from the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory revealed the bear had many fractured bones, injuries that are consistent with a vehicle collision. This was not the same black that had previously visited southern Indiana earlier this summer. If you see a bear, report it to the DNR at on.IN.gov/largemammal. Biologists use these reports to monitor bear activity and provide recommendations to local residents. Read more about the deceased bear: bit.ly/3D4G07f. When visiting Indiana look both ways twice before crossing the road.

I live with bears in my neighborhood here in CO. The big take away will be to start securing your trash if you are near a bear population.

On a visit to the U.P. I asked some Uppers about bears. They said they could be like raccoons on steroids. Bigger, more powerful and smarter.

Woody, any mention if the bear was someone's pet or if it was wandering looking for new territory?
