The Union that I belong to might be STRIKING with the Hospital that I clean for . The Union has been negotiating with the Hospital since June . Next week we will be signing the petition on whether we STRIKE or not .

I want to say both .The last time the Union went on Strike with the Hospital it cleared a lot of bad blood between Union workers and Hospital Staff . A lot of Nurses realized on how dirty and messy they were being . We were only asking for a $ 2.00 raise over the next 3 years and some things in the Language changed for the better . The bad I think we only get 40 % of our pay or so I was told .

In 1986 there was a “lock out” /strike Alcoa Warrick Operations.
I was salaried so I had to come in and work. I was a tapping crane operator in room 105.
I think it lasted almost 90 days. Us salaried folks found out two things…
1) We could run the smelter.
2) We didn’t want to run the smelter.
It was great when it was finally over. I did make a lot of money that summer. 😉

I’ve never been in a union we have worked on union jobs but had to pay Prevailing wages The union I’d have to join here has some good stuff but it has a lot of things I would not care for. One of the biggest is if they have a job 200 miles away it’s up to me to figure out were to live for the duration of the job. The young man who bought the house next to me does sprinklers he is never home last I heard he is in NJ working I know he makes unbelievable money but not sure it would be worth it

I would venture to say that the hospital does not want a strike. I'll bet they get it figured out pretty quick! I am not a union guy either but finding labor right now is very difficult your union has the upper hand, I hope you get what you need and I hope it happens quickly good luck.

We were actually called A BUNCH OF UNEDCUATED PEOPLE THAT ANY HOMLESS PERSON CAN DO . even though we have retired Military employees , I was certified in overhead crane and Forklift operator . We have a Hydraulic pump mechanic , So me might not have degrees in a Hospital setting be we are educated in other areas .

I know that we have to picket for a few hours a day . The last strike lasted 40 days . The main thing that worries me is if we don't strike the Hospital will NEVER take us serious and we'll be looked down upon even more . If we do strike The Hospital will try and wait us out . No one is really looking for work which is to our advantage . Then hopefully we'll be treated more fairly when the strike ends .

Yep, good luck to them. Good employees are a Diamond in the rough right now. Hold the line! Short summary about the four Americans we recently hired. They all have valid drivers' licenses, so they were automatic hires. One worked two days and never came back. Didn't even turn in his time. "Got a better paying job." Another worked two days as well and we haven't heard from him since. These two had the sole purpose of transporting Hispanic crews and driving dump trucks around job sites, no manual labor. I think they were at $18/hr. The third one works at the shop. He is a single father and can only work while school is in session. Fine, we'll take what we can get. He shows up about 50%. The last guy has been with us for three weeks and seems to be promising. I don't think he has missed much time. By my calculations, we are batting 37.5% with current hires.

Wow.
In 19.5 years on my job, my calculations for MY time have been at least 110%, minus vacation and sick time. 👊👊👊

The new hires and the Temps have gotten 2 bumps in pay in the last 3 years, us long timers didn't get an annual raise last year because of..... you guessed it, Covid. I was nice enough to point out to my boss that 8 can go to a different factory in town, through a temp service, doing a brain dead job, for more money than I currently make. Im not looking to start over at my age, I don't want to give up my vacation time, and my job has a lot of freedom and virtually no supervision, BUT something has got to give

I understand that because of “cost of living” I’ll be getting a 3% raise on my Social Security check next year. Biggest increase in a long time. No doubt that will be more than offset by an increased amount in my Medicare premium and inflation.
Can’t win…

Yep, the same government that calculates the cost of living adjustments also determines whether it should continue minting pennies that cost somewhere north of 3 cents each to make and distribute several years ago. Haven't seen the figures recently but with the actual cost increases over the last few years, it's probably more than an nickel to make a penny now.
They excuse the continued waste by claiming that the "public" wants the pennies to remain in circulation! Meanwhile, in the real world, the little trays near the cash registers in most restaurants and filling stations have gradually disappeared as most of the public has changed to paying at he pump or the drive-up window with their cards, largely to stop messing with carrying a pocketful of coins (and handling money since the pandemic began). Hmmm....Kinda makes you wonder.

Tell them to work a job for more than 6 weeks and see if they make more money! I can't make more money moving jobs. I guess my only option is to go back to school and get a degree. Then they will want me to be a manager! Yuck!!

I’m asking more for myself We normally go at least 50 to 75 cents per year across everyone The issue I have most of the guys working for us have been around 20 years or longer so pay wise they are at the top right now I could afford to pay them more but if things go south it becomes very hard to pay them bills trucks gas We offset that with a shared profit check the last years here they have made dang good checks. but here’s the kicker it goes right into a 401k that each guy has instead of regular check.
