As time gets closer this topic came up on a FB hunting site. When to plant fall plots? My experience has been August rainfalls are not real reliable so I have found myself in recent years seeding earlier. Any time after July 15th, if a few days of rain is forecasted I am ready to get seed in ground. Seems deer have plenty food available until later in fall so early grazing is less a issue as well.

Always varies depending on time available to me and what plant types I'm planting. I don't believe I've ever planted as early as July but I wouldn't shy away from it, especially if I were wanting to do say a cereal grain planting plus peas maybe. Plant in July, then 200lbs more per acre of winter rye in September with may touch of oats for fresher younger growth hitting end of September and early October for bow season.

Going to plant strips of Crimson clover and Buckwheat into couple older white clover plots that I will be planting to corn next year and I'm planting a mix with Australian winter peas (First experience with).

I typically plant turnips mid July to mid August, just depends on when I can work it in.
Can't control rain and you can get burned by drought on any food plots, spring or fall, but I'll assure you that you won't get a decent food plot if you don't take a risk and plant something.

I used to wait until later in the year to plant the Fall plots and have gotten burned the last few years (no rain). So, I am tilling and planting tomorrow as much as I can and plan to do more the following weekend. Everything has been sprayed and killed a few times this year already. Clover, radish, beets and I forget what else I have to go in.

I planted 250 pounds of rye grass, sunflower and feed oats last week two days before rain on trails the loggers used to move logs out. Didn’t have to disc, the ground was like dust 2 inches deep. We got 3/4 inches of rain here but don’t know what I got there yet, it’s an hour away. Bought all that seed for less than 100 dollars.
