Anyone who has paid attention to my often senseless ramblings will know that I am (now formerly) a residential construction manager. Well, about three weeks ago, I decided that I have had enough and gave my notice. I had no job lined up and no plan in place. I just knew that it was time and the best decision for myself and family. The stress and aggravation was getting the best of me and my wife was genuinely concerned. The boss wasn't thrilled, but understood. Besides, I think that he senses a slow down coming and I had just voluntarily cut some fat from the payroll.
One of the most discouraging developments over the last few years is the overall p-poor work ethic and lack of appreciation from subcontractors. Call me old fashioned, but I distinctly remember a time when subs competed for business and the workers wanted to do a good job so they wouldn't be replaced. Not anymore. Now builders around here are thankful if a crew from a given trade shows up. I don't want to see a recession or anyone suffer, but I am hopeful that this problem corrects itself.
Another source of my grief was from entitled and inconsiderate customers. Calls and texts after hours and all weekend became the norm. I had a jerk recently message me on Sunday morning to complain about how his water heater was piped. What did he think was going to get done before the opening of business Monday? The same guy complained about a towel bar placement on a Friday evening. I was proud that I remained professional and didn't tell him to stick it both times.
Anyway, I have since accepted a job with a large landscaping company as the operations manager. I've known the owner for years and have done a lot of business with him. This allows me to stay in a construction related field, but not be in charge of the whole darn thing. If the bushes get planted crooked, I got it. If the painter, drywaller, and electrician screw up, not my problem!

Most times peace is way more important than pay.
I retired from Alcoa 26 years ago this coming August because of the constant BS. Best move I ever made.
Enjoy your new occupation.

Oh yeah, if I retired some of my clients would be completely lost and unable to replace me.. Job security, but I'm getting tired and would almost welcome a break in the boom we have had recently. But then the economy will crash and there will be no work or money so I plod on.

Dude, odds are you did the right thing.
Few things are worse than staying too long at a job you hate "because expectations" "Because the time you have in because because because....
It's not worth it.
It's not worth waiting around for someone to see your worth. (they won't} It's not worth the bigger wage. It's not worth hating every minute you are there. It's not worth the damage it does.
If you have always been the working type, you'll be fine.

I'm thinking about doing the same thing but from the commercial side to an excavating sub. Our customers are typically internal so they think they can do whatever they want and it's getting old. Right now I'm waiting on a call from their VP to set up a formal interview.

I changed 6 years ago to a less stress and travel job. I traveled as much as a pro baseball teams at one time for many years. Today is my anniversary at Advantech Corporation. Three more years!

Not always. Took them almost two years to get our last position posted and filled. The gov usually isn't in a hurry.. Preaching to the choir! A former Governor (who went on to spend some time in the White House) stole a bunch of positions (35?) from other agencies to increase the staff of FSSA, which FSSA was understaffed. The former governor didn't want to be seen as a governor that "grew" government, so he made very other agency understaffed.
