I decided to buy pizzas for everyone working on a particular street in one of my projects yesterday. Aggravation and tension are at an all-time in construction and I wanted to give the workers something positive for a change. I called the local Domino's and placed an order. No delivery available and manager couldn't give me a definite pick up time because she was the only one that showed up to work. I did eventually get what I wanted and everyone was appreciative.
I then had a conversation with a friend who is in the lumber business. He sells to lumber and other building materials to local lumber yards, not Lowes or HD. He was on a conference call yesterday and was told that lumber prices are not coming down anytime soon and the mills don't even want to increase sales due to lack of trucks and drivers.
Then it was my brick salesman. He told me that he's been waiting on a load of stone for over two weeks. It's sitting in TN and he can't find a trucker to haul it here.
I stopped to grab some beer at the end of the day. There is a Qdoba next to the liquor store. "Closed for in-person dining until further notice." Virus precaution you may think? Nope. The guy at the liquor store said they don't have enough staff and the owners themselves are cooking for carry-out only.
You just can't make this crap up.

Make more sitting at home anymore. Not 100% sure what's going on and why so much money is being distributed at this point. I'm not a conspiracy guy but it almost seems a ploy to force companies to raise wages until they get the number they want at the minimum wage bracket. Cant do it through government so force it. Concrete is the same boat. Cant get finishers. I know several that are starting at $20 for unskilled and can't fill positions. We can't get drivers at all. We actually started hiring without cdl and training and paying for their license

I have been saying it for awhile. The trades are the place to be! It's only gonna get worse. I am a diesel mechanic, and we are getting further behind all the time due to being understaffed, (and a couple guys playing games and working the system to stay home more and do less when working, and unfortun6getting away with it because we cant afford to lose anybody). 🤬

Easier to sit at home and wait for government handouts.
The last pizza I bought was through a pick up window. The girl decided to give herself a $60 tip on my card

I agree LOTS of hand outs, makes working not worth it. It will be interesting to see where we are 4 years from now.

It's really frightening to me, I've been hearing about the shortages in the work force all over. I've been actively looking for some new employment as I feel this current field I'm in has run it's course and to be honest coal isn't going to stay around forever. Which brings me back to me actively looking for something else. I've put in numerous applications and have yet to receive a single response of wanting to talk on the phone or virtual or otherwise. I have received 2 e-mails stating they have chosen to go with another candidate.
But like I said if we are having an acute sever shortage of people out there willing to work you would think that I would have my choice of the litter. Beats me so the only thing I know what to do is keep working on the no's because one of them will eventually be a yes.

I know there's not a ton of places in your area but nowadays it's about who you know. I lived in Greene Co and applied for jobs for 9 months before expanding my range to include Indy and had an interview within a couple of weeks. My current job was a step up for me and one of the reasons I was hired was because my boss just happened to be talking to one of my references when I applied. Just talked to my neighbor and her daughter got an interview at a place because her cousin's husband or something works there. Same neighbor, her son got his job because she catered food to his employer and dropped off his resume. With COVID I know it's hard to stay in touch with people but that's what it's going to take for you to hear about some opportunities. Let people who work at places you're interested in subtly know you are looking and something will pop up.

Yep. Until the freebie spigot is off, many simply won't bother.
Nice move with the pizza BTW.

One of the draw backs from on-line shopping. Huge demand for drivers to deliver goods is one issue and lack of willing work force is another. Put them together and you get headaches.

I called the restaurant and told them what happened. They said they would look into it but didn't seem to concerned. I showed up in person later that day and let them know it needed to be taken care of before I left. They refunded the full amount right away.
