Not sure what happened. But my 1972 John Deere 110 has taken a bad turn for some reason. She was running and mowing fine and all of the sudden just quit. Flat out shut down! Can't even get the old girl to crank over. So the challenge is on to see if I can figure out and solve the problem with the least amount of money, time and effort. She ain't worth much. But I'd like to see if I can get her to her 50th season!!!

Check the flywheel. The magnet area wears out or the wire broke. My guess the wire broke. Plus check the ground wire to frame.

Usually when people say about cars, "They don't make em like they used to, " I think "Thank the Lord!"
However, there must be something to that saying with lawn mowers.
I had a John Deere rider for 8 years. I mowed 2 3/4 acres. Kept the oil changed. Sharpened the blades. On the 8th summer it was running but the engine smoked so bad you couldn't see. Numerous repairs over those 8 years. I've had a cub cadet since, and it's performance has been similar.
I can't in my wildest dreams imagine either of them making it 50 years! Congrats! My uncle was the same way, using the same mower he rode off of the Mayflower. Amazing.
Sounds like something simple! Good luck!

I would put 12 volts directly to the starter. If it turns over, it would appear you have electrical issues between the starter and the ignition. Check all ground wires, and all other connections for that matter. A machine of that vintage may not have safety switches, but if it does, those can be checked as well. I'm guessing you have a volt meter.

I think the real question is why are you mowing already? I probably still have weeks before I will need to mow.

I just check my rider because I will need to use it very soon. Darn grass is already growing. Walked the yard yesterday and removed branches and a couple rocks.

The only safety switch I can remember on a 110 is the neutral-start switch where you have to push the shifter forward in neutral to disengage a ground to the switch. So check that, switch, and wires to starter.

So far, I've jumped to the starter and she'll crank over. That's a good sign for a "start!"
Now to start tracing electrical, wiring, switches, solenoid...

Start simple. If the battery cables on tight? How's the ground? Corrosion on the terminal?
