Any small outboard motor gurus on here?
I have a 6hp Evinrude that has no power in reverse. Everything works in forward and it engages in reverse, but there is just no power. The prop spins and moves the boat in idle but when I throttle up the prop doesn't gain any speed.
Any ideas?

Engine revs up just no power to prop? Or engine won't rev? How do you know it is engaged?
Maybe yours is bumping out of reverse. If the engine revs up and your reverse is engaged it has to be gears slipping. Check your linkage to make sure it isn't bound up. I had an evinrude that if I had 2 screws in the water intake screen would bind it and keep it from going into gear. But it would bind when the engine was off or idled.

I motored right across the lake just fine, but no power to back up off the bank to load on the trailer. Put in reverse and prop spins, motor revs up and prop doesn't speed up. Switch to forward and it's fine.

As stated I would check the linkage.... believe you got a throttle linkage and forward and reverse linkage!

Have you test run it in a tank or a garbage can full of water or with the muffs on?

Is the prop protected by a shear pin or slip clutch?
When shifting with motor off is there a positive response like a click or lack of resistance indicating it is in gear?
Does the shifter stay in reverse when you let go of shifter?
Under power did the motor stay in reverse or just not power the boat?
Any chance your boat was creating an obstruction in reverse that was not impacting forward? Running on muffs should answer that question.
Did it seem to be cavitating?
Is prop damaged at all?

With the motor off you should be able to engage reverse and turn the prop by hand. You should be able to feel if there are some teeth not hooking up. Could there be ice in the lower keeping the gear from engaging?

Is the prop protected by a shear pin or slip clutch? Shear pin was the first thing I checked, its good When shifting with motor off is there a positive response like a click or lack of resistance indicating it is in gear? Resistance, sometimes hard to shift Does the shifter stay in reverse when you let go of shifter? Yes Under power did the motor stay in reverse or just not power the boat? Stayed in gear, spun like in idle, just didn't speed up Any chance your boat was creating an obstruction in reverse that was not impacting forward? Running on muffs should answer that question. The trip before we got into a heavy mat of moss and had very little power backing out of it. This last time was clear water Did it seem to be cavitating? NO Is prop damaged at all? Some small nicks but nothing major

Broken gears are all that is left. Turn by hand and see if you feel the broken gears. Other option is to take the lower unit apart and check. They are not hard. Or just don't use reverse.
Maybe the last guy put in a pin and not a shear pin. But if in forward when you hit them it would impact the forward gear not reverse.

I did notice a little black puddle on my barn floor under it so it's dripping lower unit oil. I believe forward it is until I can find a mechanic that won't cost as much as a replacement, or I can find a replacement.

Good luck. Good mechanics are not cheap and if you wait too long they get busy. My old standby quit in 2019. The other guys are either not small motor mechanics or were booked

Anybody ever heard of a Hangkai outboard? Amazon has a 12hp for about $1240 with free shipping.

Nope, and if you have problems with it, where will you get parts and who will work on it?
I'd look harder into getting yours diagnosed first.

I'm gonna see if the marina at the lake community outside of town can do something with it, just did the ol Google search and that popped up. I can actually get a 20hp Suzuki for about 1800, its just from a boat shop in Thailand. π³

Itβs a little bit of a haul for you, but 446 Marine just north of the causeway on Monroe was great to work with when we had issues with our boat earlier this year.

I'm not sure where you're located but there's a guy in Brownsburg that works on small outboards. I think his rates are pretty reasonable. If you want his number let me know.
