After the experience with the otter and a few asking why I didn't have video, I believe I have decided I want a video camera.
I am not looking for television show quality but would like something decent.
Does anybody want to share some experience with and recommendations for and decent camera I could fim turkey, deer, and waterfowl hunts with hopefully some cool non target experiences to boot?

Also interested. I used to make 100 or so videos every winter of hare hunting. When my old Sony Handycam HDR 550 had to many days of -20 filming and crashed i quit and have never gotten another. Whats new out there in handycam size?

I have no idea, but a buddy likes to video, I can ask him. Self filming or somebody else filming? Gun mounted or stand alone?

I'm not looking for gun mounted because I don't want to be restricted as to what I can point the camera at. I figure a stand alone camera would work for self or secondary filming.

Isnt Go Pro the big boy now Yes but its not for distance at all. If you want close up its great but stuff far away and I'm talking after 50 yards its not so great. A combo of both would be great to make vids with.

I use a handycam cx675 for most hunts and a sony a6000 for spot and stalk stuff. I can PM you a link to the youtube collection, don't really like the idea of spamming the forum.
The handy cam isnt great, but I film mostly for my own enjoyment and review shot placement.

Ya I tried mine on my shotgun for bird hunting and shooting clays. You can't see anything I shot at.

In 2018 I purchased a video camera to self film my hunts. I did allot of research on the subject and the equipment. I decided to go with a small budget because it was just for my viewing entertainment. I bought a used Canon VIXIA HFR80 from B & H Photo for $250 along with an extra battery. I chose this model due to it's 57X zoom and the software to use my phone as a remote. I also bought a cheap tripod $25 new, and made me a tree stand arm as well.
Pros: inexpensive, 57X zoom is super cool, battery life around 4hrs each even in very cold weather, the camera was a nice small size and easy to operate, great quality videos
Cons: the remote software never worked and after delving into it more closely found out from other users it would never work! The cheap tripod is always jerky...
So from my first time first hand experience. A Good remote is a must. A Good smooth tripod is also a must.
I have been eyeballing the Canon Vixia HF G20, 30, 40 or G50. But have no experience with them.
Hope this helps and good luck!!!

Just a quick note on tripods. I just use a tripod for a spotting scope. Beefier and heavier is better to a point. A cheap lightweight tripod will wobble at the slightest breeze. A good smooth panning head is a must. I have a few cheap aluminum tripods, they are "o.k." in calm weather, but for any wind I have 2 others that are my "go to" tripods. One is a heavy metal tripod, it came in the package with the spotting scope. No idea of the brand, but it weighs probably 5 pounds. The other tripod that I have is a very lightweight tripod for carrying into the back country. It's a Manfrotto Carbon Fiber 4 leg section tripod. I put a good ball head on it, and if it's windy out there it has a hook on the center post that I can hang a bag full of rocks on to keep it steady. It's very sturdy and stiff, but if I wasn't going to be backpacking it around I'd stick with the less expensive heavier one.
