Does anyone else enjoy shooting the older round ball guns? I have an old CVA Ky. rifle that I built from a kit over 20 years ago. Its a .45 cal. and is very accurate with light loads of 40 to 50 grains of ffg. The twist is 1 in 66". I killed my first MZ deer with this rifle. parson

I do all of my target work with Round ball. My Firestorm has a 1/48 twist and works just fine for that.
If I need heavier bullets for game, I'll jump right up to a 360gr minnieball, but 90% of what I do is PRB.

You bet, I love shooting the "older" style muzzleloaders. I have a 50cal Lyman Great Plains that I shoot with round ball. Have a .32 squirrel rifle. A 45 cal Dangler Flint Lock. A 12 guage side by side and just picked up a .56 cal smooth bore that I'm going to use on black bear this fall. My wife tells me I was born 150 years too late. I think she is right.

I normally hunt with either an Omega or an old Renegade, both in .50 caliber. I can honestly say that I love to hunt with that old Renegade, but I usually us the Omega until I can get some meat in the freezer. Then out comes the old smokepole. I suspect that one day I may give up the "modern" muzzleloader altogether.

I shoot PBR a lot more these days since my favorite ML is a 1 in 48" twist, sabots are ok too but too expensive for much practice. The last deer I took went down to a .54 PBR.

my first muzzy was a tc of some sort, it came in a kit. I remember using real butter on my round patches. And i used real lard on the barrel during the off season. For some reason it seems like that was a lifetime ago.

Posted this picture before, but here is my T/C Renegade I built back 25 years ago, more or less. I love it, and hunt with a patched ball over 85 grains powder. Only thing that has changed is that I use Pyrodex instead of black powder now, and use a pistol scope instead of open sights. It does not care for the heavier bullets at all, but throws lead balls modestly well.

I have a .45 Dixie. Patched ball behind a load of fff is all it has ever has through it; there fun aren't they.

I have, but haven't shot it in a long time, a Thompson Center Hawken.
I got it way back when...
Well made gun, but I switched over to an inline for hunting when Knight first came out with them.

I use way older guns. Check out my intro. My #1 choice for deer is a .54 Flint. It's older brother is a .54 cap that has not been out except for oiling for 6 years. For turkey I use a 10 bore SxS original. I have a .36 flint in the works for squirrel and fun. It sends shivers down my spline when I cost out a shot with one of those new inlines.
