Hey everybody! I have been hunting Indiana for years, on the site for years, and taking my kids hunting for years.
My son, 10, is done with his 3 apprentice license, and the state I moved to a few years back, IL (I know don't give me too hard of a time about it), has been on lockdown since March without access to Hunters Education due to government employees working remotely.
I called Indiana DNR and they said I can't purchase a license for him without Hunters Ed. Indiana Hunters Ed is for Indiana residents only.
Does anyone know of any way to get an exemption?
Take Hunters Ed completely online? Another state where the prospect does not have to be a resident?
I have the question into IL DNR but they are not accessible like Indiana DNR.

Sounds like you're in a real tight spot. I really dont know if you'll be able to use an outside state as a way around the hunters ed requirement. Maybe you can put a phone call in to one of Illinois Conservation Officers?

I took an online hunters ed course last year. I needed my card to get an elk license in Colorado. I think it took a few hours to complete.

Thanks, the issue is there is an in-person Field Day Requirement that I am not sure if they have created a work around yet. I have questions into the IL DNR. Does anyone have IL DNR contacts?

I have heard people brag on Texas's online program. I don't know if it's any better than Indiana's though.

Indiana is out for the year until he gets hunter safety.

I think I found the loophole to get my boy a shot at hunting this year. Can anyone verify this? I will be calling the DNR to verify.
"Free youth hunting days, Nov. 28-29 Introduce the next generation to hunting on free youth hunting days. The second set of dates falls on Nov. 28-29. Free youth hunting days are a great chance for youth to harvest a deer, try waterfowl hunting, or take to the fields or forest in search of other game.
Youth must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 18 years of age, and the adult must possess a valid hunting license. During free youth hunting days, resident youth and nonresident youth do not need a hunting license, a State migratory waterfowl stamp, or a Harvest Information Program (HIP) number to hunt waterfowl or other migratory birds. All persons 16 years old or older must possess a federal duck stamp."

Last Update: DNR Officer confirmed any youth can take any game on 11/28 and 11/29 without a license as long as they are with a licensed hunter.
boom, let the boy hunt!
