What are you guys paying for a deer shoulder mount in your area? I got a guy here in Evansville who does it for $280. He did one for me 12 years ago but since then I did all mine myself with skull mounts.

$280 is incredibly low, especially if he does a good job. I know a guy who is a very good taxidermist, and he charged me $350 and I felt fortunate to get it done that reasonably. He used to do a lot of taxidermy work, and he`s won some awards, but he`s scaled back now and only does work for those of us he knows, and very limited work even at that.

Bill, That is really an excellent buck that you killed. I would not go cheap. It’s a lifetime investment. I take all my critters to Dean Stallion of American Taxidermy in Boonville. american-taxidermy.net/home/3927568

I charge 450. When it comes to taxidermy, like most everything else. You get what you pay for.

I paid over 500 for mine, but the guy is really good and I didn't want to take chances. At 280 I'd be leery. Check out some of his other work at least.

Not gonna lie I'd probably not even consider anyone beneath the $400 range in my area, without discovering why? Are they newer, building clients...are they not using your hide on your deer (happens A LOT) or is their product simply inferior. There is a guy in my area that simply doesn't take many in, and it is more of a hobby. For the like $300 he charges its a fairly decent return...but his mounts at 5 years old look 15 while my 15 year old mounts look 5. Lifespan and attention to detail are the two biggest things I notice in mount quality.

I guess I should’ve said he is a friend of mine. He’s been in business 12 -13 years and he’s done one for me and one for my son. It is not his full time job, just side job. He uses the cape that comes with the deer. In this case I skinned the deer with the whole cape attached. I would prefer to just do it myself and skull it but my buddy who helped drag it out said he would kick my butt if I didn’t mount it. So instead of getting my butt kicked it’s getting mounted.

I too am also a big fan of the skull mounts. In fact I think it's becoming more of a trend lately.

I am in the $500+ boat as well. They are not cheap. The few I have seen that have been cheaper are guys just getting started and...it tends to show. I would rather spend a little more....wait a little longer and have it done right. The guy I use has done 4 for me now and doesn't even advertise and stays busy. Otherwise if it has antlers, the skull or skull cap goes out on the face of the barn.
