Picked up a Knight Disc Extreme in .45 cal for $150 - couldn't resist for the price. However, I'm totally new to muzzleloaders. Any advice on loads, cleaning, other tips? Thanks.

I should probably add that I'm planning on hunting with my shotgun this season, I can't see having much time to get comfortable with the ML this season.

well welcome to black powder. is one of the best types of shoting if you ask me. now i have a brolin legacy and use a .74 gran charge with a bullet called a black belt, (saves time not haveing to use a patch.) with yours being a .45 i would say defently try the black belts you can get them at any outdoors shop for like 6 bucks a pack. and start with a .55 gran charge and work your way up. u'll know when you got the right charge, bullet combination cause your rifle with give off a distenct crack. if you got anymore questions feel free to ask me and the hubby love helping people with black powders. good luck and stay safe

Since your a newbie to MZ loading i suggest you buy a black powder substitute in pellets like Pyrodex, Triple Seven or American Pioneer Powder in the stick form. Use 2-3 pellets which is 100 - 150 grains of powder and a sabot type bullet of your choice. A lot of people use Power Belt bullets. Use one between 235 - 335 grain weight for deer hunting. Start with two pellets and see what kind of accuracy you get then try three. A 150 grains of powder is a hefty load with good amount of recoil. Good luck, h.h.

Thanks for the info - picked up the gun last night at UPS, appears it came with everything i need for cleaning and what not. Even came with a dvd showing how to break down the gun, clean it, load it, etc. I may stop in at Walmart tonight and see what they've got for bullets, pellets and primers so I can give it a try as I'm checking the sights on my shotgun. From the reading I've been doing it sounds like the 777 pellets are a popular choice, but can't find any reference to them being available for a .45 cal. Looks like it might be the Pyrodex pellets for me - is there that big a difference between them? I've heard the 777 is way easier to clean.

T-7 is available in .45 pellets and its cleaner burning than pyrodex and more powerful. either one will work. most walmarts carry power belt and T/C shock wave bullets. i think power belts will give you a better selection of different bullet weights for your .45. i think 200 grn bullets are the only selection in .45 shock wave. good luck, h.h.

You can buy 777 in loose form.

Made the mistake of going to Walmart Wednesday night - forgot how scary that is this close to gun season opener. They didn't have much of anything, nothing for my .45. Went to the Big R store in Warsaw tonight and they had the 777 pellets for .45 cal, plus the Remington primers were about half what they were at Walmart. Picked up some of the Powerbelts to try along with the couple dozen unbranded bullets with sabots that came with the rifle and accessory pack. Going to give it a try tomorrow morning when I make sure my shotgun's still on, then give the bow one last try tomorrow night.

I don't know if its legal to use a saboted bullet in .45 caliber in Indiana. The bullet diameter must be .45 or greater. The power belts should be fine. You might ask the CO's in the CO forum.

Yeah, I saw a reference to that and checked out the regs before buying.
I took it out on Friday morning along with my shotgun and had a blast shooting it. Went through 3/4 of my box of 777 pellets, almost all of the sample bullets that came with it. It cleaned up real well with dish soap and water and solvent. Got some Weaver bases and stuck a cheap 3-9x40 simmons scope i had on it, gonna try to get it sighted in sometime soon after I pick up some more pellets. Maybe if I I feel good enough with it I'll take it out for ML season.

Ok. Thats good. I always thought that was a little silly. It actually kept me from buying a .45 caliber Remington 700 ML. It went on sale at Wal Mart here for a rediculously low price. I should have bought it. At the time I would have had to use round balls or Mini balls.
