I was kind of surprised when I saw that hunting is only allowed to 4pm at the park I was drawn for, guess I just figured it would be the same as the regular season.

All state park hunts are those same hours. They want to give you time to retrieve, check in deer, and check out of the park before dark. Be happy, the start time used to be 7:30am!!! You dont even want to know how many deer we had to let walk by then. That was sickening. They finally fixed it to the half hour before sunrise, after enough complaing, and the safety track record was proven. My guess.

I’m sure you know there were plenty of shots before that starting shooting time. Never understood why it wasn’t the half hour before sunrise like other hunt hours any way.

It just caught me off guard, I assumed it would be the same but we all know what happens when you assume, lol. I can’t wait to get out there and experience this. In my head I envision deer running around everywhere but I know the reality of it is,it will probably be just like any other time I’ve ever hunted.

The amount of shooting that you hear for the first hour or so will sound like a war zone. You will wonder what the he!! everybody is shooting at. Your vision of deer running everywhere will be true in front of everybody else. Lol

Best bet is to go in deep. Places that are easy access to you will be same for everybody else. By same token, we have seen guys at farthest places possible. Remember you have to get deer out of tough places! Some parks will help retrieve deer, some dont. Some of our better spots are right off a road or trail right under your nose. Places the average hunter may not consider looking. Need to find bedding area, sanctuary, or travel corridor to there, or places where deer will enter park from outside coming in from feeding over night. For sure, stay in stand all day or as much as possible. Have definately killed more deer after guys get down to walk, have lunch, or a potty break. We have great fun on these hunts!

^^^^^ What he said. We take a different approach from "normal" deer hunting, we literally hunt the other hunters... No, not that way. We set up on travel and sanctuary areas where other hunters will push the deer. We all know how impatient and fidgety deer hunters can get and know they will move around looking for a better spot. We also know that hunters will move around tracking and dragging the deer they have killed. We set up in areas to intercept any deer pushed around by those activities. Also, get to you spot as absolutely early as possible. We camp when available and head to our spot as early a we can. We know we push deer out of our area but we also know if we stay quite that all the other hunters will push them back as they are going to their spots.

Yes, hunt the other hunters is very successful, the only caveat is that if you are set up close to the sanctuary and another hunter sets up 100 yds further out, they will get first crack at the deer before they even reach you.

I remember the 730shooting time. You always waited for the first person to shoot. One year it was me and then it proceeded to sound like world War 3. When I went to check my deer in I was told, " Man you guys waited late today. Yesterday the shooting started at like 645." I just laughed.

I always chuckled at the NO VOLLEY rule or suggestion. Some of those guys must have extended mags on their extended mags.
