I've been shooting an Omega muzzleloader since they first came out. I used to use 100 gr. of Pyrodex with the Hornaday XTP hollow point sabots and I would run a bore snake thru my gun every 2-3 shots.
This year, I decided to try the 777 along with the T/C Shockwave sabots with the poly tip. On the first load, the bullet seated fine. On the second load, the bullet stopped about an inch short of seating correctly. I had to put quite a bit of pressure on it for it to eventually seat, and the ramrod actually felt like it was digging in to the tip of the bullet. I thought maybe there was quite a bit of fouling since this was the first time I had tried the 777. But I removed the breech plug after the 2nd shot and there did not seem to be any more fouling (actually less) than when I had shot Pyrodex. So I started to run a bore snake thru the gun after every shot, but I still had the problem of the bullet stopping about an inch short and having to really put some pressure on it to get it to seat and each time it felt like my ramrod was digging into the bullet. Meanwhile, my hunting partner is shooting his new Omega with my old setup (which I had recommended to him) and he is not having any trouble at all.
I don't think that it was the 777, because the bullet was still being difficult to seat even after swabbing the barrel. Has anyone else had difficulty with the shockwaves seating? I would like to continue to test this load to see how I like it, but if I can't get it loaded any easier I will have to give up on it and try something else. This being the first time I've tried 777, I did like the difference in the odor and the ease of cleaning when I was done.
Any suggestions?
