So sorry for your loss. One of our cats was diagnosed with feline osteosarcoma last October. It is getting very close to euthanasia time. She is very thin and sleeps 95% of the time, but she can still hop around on her three good legs and still eats, drinks, and uses the litter box. There is no indication that she's in any pain.
I've experienced the deaths of dozens of pets in my life, and it never gets any easier. Hang in there!

Thank you all. It takes some getting used to. Its weird coming home and not be greeted, no dog under the table at dinner. I found myself getting up in the dark for work, being careful not to step on the dog, forgetting that he wouldnt be there. The oldest is already asking for a new dog, and the youngest (2) is asking where the dog is, but just because im not ready for a new dog, doesnt mean I havent used this opportunity (and the kids) to start convincing my wife that we will need another dog. We planted a new Dogwood next to Cody yesterday.

After we lost our lab to cancer, we held out for 3 or 4 months. Then, off to the shelter we went, and now Roscoe is king of the couch!

I have a very specific dog in mind for our next and im willing to wait for that. I want a chocolate lab/mix that is a female, puppy, short hair, rescue. I may eventually settle for a golden or black if I just find the right dog.

I lost my Lucy a year ago or so and it's tough. I still catch myself from time to time getting a little soft over her being gone. Your best friends you carry in your heart...so they are never as far as we may think they are. Sorry for your loss.

Wish me luck, Im ready for a new pup, and I submitted an app for this 3 month old chesepeake bay retriever today. Should make a good shed dog, hopefully anyway.

Either way, the pup wins big if it winds up with you, and you win too. It`s obvious you`re a great "dad", and ALL pets should have it as good as this pup will.

It's a male, I was searching for a female but shelter pups are going fast so I had to be less picky.

I just know there's something really special for you and this little guy. Just watch.

Those Chessi's make loyal companions, little bullheaded though.

Pick up all those power cords as you probably know they LOVE to chew everything. I'm sure he'll keep you busy with endless games of fetch! He looks like a good dog to me!

Didnt get the chessie. Found a hound a couple hours away, a little older at 1 year but he's really pretty.

Here is the hound. I can't get over how pretty he is. The listing was light on info so I'm trying not to get my hopes up. No idea if he will be good with kids (3 and 7) and our two cats is what really worries me. Any hound owners that have advice? Can you train out the prey drive just for the cats, or should I move on?

I would start with a pup, to achieve the type of loyalty you deserve. That way they start fresh and learn pecking order with kids and other pets.
Be that as it may, my MIL got a mutt from a lady that was about 3yo, and she is 10 times more than you could ask for. She came in having a cat, and my boy running around nuts. So maybe just how the dog was brought up or treated.

So maybe just how the dog was brought up or treated. The plan had always been to get a puppy. This Chessie wasnt the first I tried, the ones im interested in seem to be either going faster than I can find them, or I questioned the adult size (looking for 60# plus adult). I'm up to 6 or 7 that I missed out on, my buddy recently tried 15 times before getting a dog. Each rejection is a kick to the balls. Truthfully, I thought I could wait for the perfect dog, but ive found I'll have to settle in some areas or it may be a long wait.

I am very sorry for your loss. Even though you're well on your way to filling that void, the old friend will always be missed.
This might surprise some, but I'm optimistic that we'll see our 4 legged friends again someday.
When I finally replaced my Gracie, I got an American Bulldog. He's big and we say he's mean, but really just stubborn and aggressive. One thing for sure, that boy would give his life for me. When I'm not well, he knows it. He'll put his head in my lap. He won't let my wife come close to me.
They are a friend that a human can never be.
