..and I have a couple of questions.
I see the regulations state shot size must be #4,5,6,7, or 7-1/2.
I'll be using a Mossberg 500 in either 12 or 20 ga. Which shot size is your favorite?
I would think the larger the shot, the harder the hit, but you also cut down on the number of pellets available to make a hit. I have a couple of handfuls of 6 shot Winchester in both gauges, but I'm not against buying more ammo.

I would try a few different Turkey loads; pattern them and see what your gun shoots well.

Our regulations are a little behind with the emergence of tungsten shot...#9 would be interesting to be able to use.
But yeah...shoot a few different ones and see what patterns best.

Speaking just of tungsten... heavier than lead and penetrates better so you can use a smaller shot size with a lot more pellets.
If I get equally great patterns out of #5 and #6 lead I'll probably pick the #6.

I shoot #6. In a 12 Ga 3" turkey load, you get about 100 more pellets using #6 as compared to #5.
I've shot them at 40 yds and #6 still hits plenty hard.
A guy I know had a ceramic bowl on a counter that "spare" shotgun shells and other ammo ended up in. There were 2.75", 3" #4, #7, you name it, and just about all popular brands. When I was just getting started turkey hunting I asked him what he used. He pointed to the bowl and said, "whatever I grab out of there". I asked if he wasn't concerned about the pattern and he said, "they all work under 20 yds".

I have 4s, 5s, and 6s. My sonโs 500 in 20 gauge liked the 6s the best and my 870 liked the 5s the best, but I am now shooting the 4s and they work just fine out to 40 yards.

It really is a preference thing. I have always had great luck with #6's. I used to use federal premium 3 inch Turkey loads and now I use the Winchester Longbeard XR #6's. Absolutely love them and so does my gun.I will however usually will back up the #6 shot with #4's just in case a 2nd followup shot is needed.

I would try a few different Turkey loads; pattern them and see what your gun shoots well. Remember that the choke is one more piece of this puzzle. You probably want the tightest constriction choke you can get, but even at that, each choke will cause the shot to react differently with any given shotgun and load combination.

Not if you using steel or tungsten shot...๐

I like Long Beard XR'S #5. They patterned best out of my gun. I have shot my last 3 turkey's with this set up. Longest shot was 61 yards, closest was 25.
Good luck to you!

With Carlson making longbeard xr specific chokes that is what I am going to probably use out of both Easton and my guns next year.
If TSS didn't cost as much as my truck is use it but....the opinions on the xr stuff is pretty consistently good.

Already have one coming for Easton's new gun and will pick one up for mine soon...both Mossberg 500s. One 20g and one 12g.
Hope to have his gun finished up soon...have the red dot mounted and have the cheek riser for the new stock. Stock itself is supposed to ship next week. When the gun is done it should actually fit him like it's supposed to and be able to grow with him as time goes on. The tactical stock I bought has a 11.5 to 15 inch LOP. Should weigh under 6lbs and if the stock works as advertised the recoil should be a non issue.

I shoot a mossberg 500 12ga with a carlson's longbeard choke and longbeard 3" #5 shot. Longest shot on a bird is 30 yds and it knocked him down pretty hard.
