Forgot that yesterday was my last day in the Marine Corps, 51 years ago. After 16 months in South Vietnam I was glad to get back to the "world", even though I was "in the rear with the beer", and not out where a lot of guy's names got put on the Wall, couple of them were friends of mine while growing up. Wouldn't take a million bucks for the experience, as I learned a lot about other people that I would not have met and worked with, but would not take twice that much to do it again. Had extended my tour by 3 months so I could get an "early out" and not wind up back in the States at a base where shine your boots, polish your brass, stand inspections, probably would got me office hours in a hurry. BTW, an unexpected loud noise [bolt of lightning] stops me in my tracks to this day. Kind of reminds me of what a Russian made 122mm rocket sounds like when it explodes near by. Nuff said

Thank you for stepping up! Probably seems like yesterday?
The owner of my hunting land spent some time in a wonderful place called "Cu Chi." Unbeknownst to him the Army built it on the most expansive Vietcong tunnel complex in the country. He doesn't tell a lot of stories, but they are well worth listening to.
One of my favorites is the time he chased down a turkey with a knife, and they ended up cooking it. About the time it was looking good a helicopter came in and blew it over in the ashes. He also mentioned that once in a while they would scare a group off of a freshly made meal and end up eating it. It could have been poisoned but nobody cared.
He ended up making a career of the Army and now pursues deer with vigor, when he isn't keeping his grass at millimeter height.
To your point about sudden noises---he told me he makes his wife hold that buzzer that some eateries give you when on hold for a table. Threw one across the room once.

tenring - Thank you for your service! My daughter is in "CHAP" (Cuktural History of American People) right now. It's an advanced high school class that combines American history and literature. I'm planning on taking her to interview a few veterans tomorrow for a class project. She has already interviewed my Dad, who was stationed in Cuba during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Today is taken up with a flag detail at our local high school, practice for a while before so we get it right. Weather dictates whether or not that I even leave the house any more. The class that your daughter is in sounds like an excellent thing for her to study. She can get history from the "horses mouth" instead of the "fertilizer" that she is most likely exposed to in today's educational environment. If she needs more info later on, I'm willing to drive up after her school hours next week or when ever. Any more I have to look at my calendar as soon as I get up in the morning to see what I gotten myself into and forgotten. If a meeting should take place, not to worry about my language, over 40 years of marriage has cleaned up my mouth while in mixed company.

I had the class 30 years ago and give it rave reviews. She really had to work her schedule around to be able to fit it into her schedule this year. Unfortunately it has different teachers now, but the subject matter and intent of the class is the same. No worries about not being able to do an interview on short notice. I reached out to my uncle's brother-in-law who was also a Devil Dog in Vietnam. We are meeting him in Shelbyville tomorrow. He said he would honored to do it. ☺
