As his Dad is deployed and his Mom has a ton on her plate, Grandpa decided to take Joshua for the day. But he got bored and wanted something to do. Since we are getting low on bread, I figured it would be a good time to let him help me bake another batch of our whole wheat bread. My wife and I have been baking this bread for over 40 years. Originally, we grew our own winter wheat and we rigged up an old John Deere 110 to a grindstone so we could grind it low and slow. Moisture content would be something under 12%. Then in later years, I'd get my wheat from Buck and Jake Singleton in North Liberty, IN. Well, as I type this, the house is smelling awesome! Thanks to Joshua helping me:

He says he has the most fun punching down the dough after the first rise!

Passing on the tradition. Something he will hopefully never forget.

At our Christmas gathering at our house, three girl cousins aged 8-9 disappeared into the empty sun room for a while. About an hour later they came and called the whole crowd in. They had moved a couch around to face the crowd. They disappeared behind the couch and proceeded to put on an elaborate puppet show with their dolls, all original story, complete with some really good songs. About 15 minutes worth.
We were flabbergasted. The girls only see each other 2-3 times a year. They said they were just looking for something to do...
Things like the doughboys an puppet players are priceless.
Anybody else got a good story about amazing kids?

Did you BOYS wash your hands first??? Oh yeah! The hands got washed and washed and washed some more! This kid is obsessive about having clean hands! And now he is super proud of the "bread he baked!" And he always likes the Dutch toppings we've been using for decades, like this:

Is that a slice of Swiss cheese? Nope! That is some aged, imported Dutch Gouda cheese! We typically age it for a few extra months to give it a better, sharper taste!

Nothing like hand kneaded bread, then cheese and dark chocolate on top of that. Made my saliva gland go into overload !

Joshua and grandpa both, living the high life. You both just gave each other something indescribable, immesurable, and priceless.
