How big of a hassle is it? My brother in law and sister want me to come visit them in texas. I'm wanting to duck hunt while down there so I'll need my gun.

It’s been awhile but I just had to declare the gun and the ammunition could not be with the gun in the case. If I remember right the gun had to be in a lockable hard sided case

It's not bad. Just go to the TSA website and follow all the rules. I've never had trouble (except when they lost my gun when I went to Alaska), but I print the policy and take it with me just in case.
It will need to be in a locked hard case. Ammo can be in the case but needs to be in the original box or some other container meant for ammo storage. They'll have you open your case and place a form inside while you're checking it at the luggage counter. The TSA might want to look inside, but usually not.

Personally, UPS is your friend. Especially since you are going to family.
I would ship it ahead of time to them, and then have them ship it to you once you're home. Ammunition should be easily available locally for the hunt.

Now if you gonna take a high $$$ Gun you should get a high $$$ case for it IMO

I'd be inclined to ship it to myself at my in-laws via UPS. Insure it for more than $1,000. Legal to do so. Buy ammo there unless you handload, then I'd just take the ammo and still shop the gun.

Unless theyve changed something, they used to stick a big red tag on it to alert everyone and their brother handling luggage that there is a gun inside.
If thats still so, id look at getting another bag to lock the case inside of.

Good advice by LCH. I've flown with firearms many times and it's pretty easy as he says, just show up a little early and allow a little time for this and your firearm won't be on the baggage turnstile when you arrive at your destination, you usually have to go to the adjacent office to get it.
I've lost mine flying also .... twice. Once when I got to AK my gun didn't show, they brought it to my motel late that night. The other time coming home they lost almost everything including my cape and antlers and firearm and delivered it to my house 75 miles from the Indy airport the next day.

I’d do it again it’s not hard at all people do it all hunting season yes things do get lost but it’s low numbers and IMHO not worth worrying about
We get tons of stuff shipped to us at work and ship quite a bit I’ve seen Fed UPS trucking companies and our postal service lose stuff it happens 95% of time it shows up the same or next day
