Last spring I found this long dead osage tree while clearing a new trail. I saw the potential in it so I brought it home. I cut it in half lengthwise with a chainsaw. See the snakey grain lines? That's what caught my eye in the woods. Today I removed the outer layer with a draw knife and got to solid wood. I sanded it and smoothed out the back with an angle grinder with a chainsaw disc. I sealed it with shellac. The snakey grain looks amazing. The hard work is done. I'll have to wait until I get another day off to finish it up. Any guesses on what it's going to be? Woody, you can't guess š

Iām not sure!? This I know. As much as you love your Osage orange, I developed a true hatred for the wood back on the farm. Many moons before I was a thought my long gone relatives decided that Osage made excellent fence posts. While this is a fact, it was a royal pain for me and my trusty fence pliers. Those out there that have tried an emergency repair in freezing NW Indiana winters, prior to herding the cows that got out of a busted barbed wire section back in... know what Iām talking about. Somehow, that looks too pretty to be a fence post!?!?

A few years later it rotted at the base and fell over. I told her it was my turn to pick out the post. I cut a forked osage trunk and used it. That mailbox post will still be there long after I'm gone.

Never worked with osage, but had a little experience with locust posts, and it sounds similar. Still have a faint scar under my chin where the barbed wire second strand hit me when the first strand that I was stretching as tight as possible with a crowbar broke and I fell forward onto the second strand. I expect those locust posts may still be there surrounding our garden patch. Seemed like if you really wanted a nail in one, you'd better pre-drill for it, and forget about using staples.

With Scrub you never know what the end project will be, but a bow was going to be my guess.

With Scrub you never know what the end project will be, but a bow was going to be my guess. It's been dead for too long to be used for a bow. The cracks are too deep. I would guess it's been dead for longer than I've been alive. Osage doesn't decay like other trees. It's amazing stuff.
