I got to lay my hands on a Ruger American in 450 Bushmaster tonight at Rural King. Nice and compact and felt REALLY good. I have been seriously considering picking one up for a few months. Anyone here have this setup? How is the recoil and accuracy? Thanks for any information.

Friend of a friend has one, in fact I believe he knows 2 people that have them. I have the .450 BM in AR flavor. As for accuracy, both are accurate on paper, one isn't so accurate on deer, but I believe it's the trigger pullers fault on that one. Either he can't make a killing shot more than about 20% of the time on things with fur, or can't wait for a clear shot so he lobs one in the thick stuff hoping that what he shot at will die. Either way, that trigger pullers success on deer with it is terrible.

My buddy has a 450, but I'm not certain of the make. He did tell me that it has a muzzle brake and is virtually recoil free compared to other HP's or slug guns. He also said that it is loud as hell. His comfortable range is 200 yards, which is more than enough for where he hunts.

I have the Ruger American Ranch in 450 BM... it prints paper as well as I can shoot. Pulled it out to verify zero for season this year and it shot a 1-1.25 moa group at 100 yards. I almost always used a mz during firearms and my slug gun for park hunts, after the slug gun let me down ( long story) I was in search of something new. I settled on the 450 BM and couldn’t be happier and I will never go back unless forced to do so. In two years it’s taken 6 deer from 35-125 yards results have been very pleasing, 2 dead in tracks and 4 that haven’t gone over 50 yards from POI. Blood trails have been good enough I think a blind man could follow them. First session I got it dialed and subsequently shot 2 shots each @ 50, 100, 150, this resulted in a six shot group just under 3”. I wouldn’t hesitate shooting at one 200 out. Shooting Hornady Black with the 250 FTX bullet.
Those are the pros, the only con is a result of a pro in that there is a muzzle break and though it is effective in reducing the recoil to 20 gauge or less it is extremely loud. Loud enough that I invested in a pair of electronic muffs to take to the field, and I would highly recommend that you do the same if you don’t already.
One suggestion is on scope choice. This gun is effective to 300, and there are quite a few companies offering turrets for this round. If I had to do it again I would get one with this turret. There is a video out there where a fella from MI who I believe worked with Ruger to bring this gun to market, is shooting it at 100, 200, and 300 with a turret and had some really good results. I’m actually contemplating swapping scopes just haven’t pulled the trigger.
Hope this gives you some relief on your new purchase! Scott

Thanks for all of the input. It does have a muzzle brake, and it is in my future.

My friend has the ar setup on his rifle and it’s the only gun he uses on public and private. He claims it’s the best public legal round money can buy. I haven’t looked into them too much but I think the ammo is very expensive..maybe not though? Funny story - the second week of him owning his $900 .450 platform, we went hunting and after the hunt he forgot his gun on my cargo rack attached to my Jeep. I drove a half mile and he yelled “STOP!!” Lol lucky for him, the gun was still there. I have shot his rifle at a target a handful of times and yes it’s accurate, albeit very loud as others have stated.

Ammo is $25-30 a box of 20. I built one on an AR and love it! I handloaded for it, but in the end, I couldnt beat the accuracy of factory Hdy Black. Have seen it devastate on deer, so two thumbs up from me. Unfortunately I never got a shot with it in my hands this season.

I went with the Rugar American 350 Legend instead of the 450 Bushmaster. They are very similar from everything I had read and in my mind I equated them to the 12 gauge/20 gauge comparison. Both kill deer just as dead at the same ranges, but one doesn't kick like a mule.
The model I chose was difficult to find in stock and i didn't get it until Thanksgiving weekend, so i haven't had the opportunity to shoot it yet unfortunately. Ammunition runs $12 to $20 per box of 20.
