For days, my wife has been back and forth as to whether or not to cook a turkey for Thanksgiving. Even at this moment she is wrestling with the thought, asking me again for my input. We have plenty of deer meat and home grown beef. She’d rather not do a turkey. None of the guests care. We’re all fine without turkey. She’d really like to make some pepper steak! And now she seems to be bent a bit towards, “Oh, but it’s such a great tradition!” So I say, “All right then. Cook a turkey!” And she’s like, “Aw, I don’t know if I want to...!” So I’m like, “Gotta head off to work! Do what you want. We’ll all still love ya!!!” So, anybody else foregoing the bird this year?

Not only are we having a turkey, we are having two. Wife is going to cook one like usual and I’m going to smoke one for the first time. We will also have a ham. On the other hand I’d be perfectly happy with some pizza, wings, and whiskey for thanksgiving.

Traditional Thanksgiving dinner at my sisters, and all but one of our 9 living siblings will be there, and of course, all the kids and grandkids of all the siblings.
We have Christmas day either at our house or my sister-in-laws place and it`s usually just my wife and I, and her sister and brother-in-law, so no wild game there either.
But for New Years Eve dinner, I like to do a venison roast, and I just happen to have one left from last year`s deer, so even if I don`t have one by then, we`re good. And my wife is slowly coming around to enjoying the taste of, and no getting freaked out, about eating more than just deer burger.

gregr:My wife never ate wild game till she met me and she too was a bit apprehensive about eating it. Now I must say my wife is an awesome cook she cooks the old world way like our grandparents would have so she began challenging me to improve our cooking skills and come up with unique recipes which is a great way for her to become involved in my outdoor endeavors with out going outdoors.
Don't just throw it on the grill, look up recipes on the computer and make them.

Besides turkey, the original Thanksgiving feast also had waterfowl and venison...

Smoked Cornish hens for us. My parents are getting older and don't eat too much. The kids will only eat enough turkey to earn dessert. Frankly, I don't care that much for even the best traditional turkey, fried or baked.
I'd be much happier with wings & beer than anything.

I guess it depends on the source: According to what traditionally is known as "The First Thanksgiving," the 1621 feast between the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag at Plymouth Colony contained waterfowl, venison, ham, lobster, clams, berries, fruit, pumpkin, and squash. William Bradford noted that, "besides waterfowl, there was great store of wild turkeys, of which they took many."[5] en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgiving_dinner

Actually, your source says the same thing: William Bradford, the governor Winslow mentions, also described the autumn of 1621, adding, “And besides waterfowl there was great store of wild turkeys, of which they took many, besides venison, etc. Besides, they had about a peck a meal a week to a person, or now since harvest, Indian corn to that proportion.”

The reason they had copious amounts of waterfowl on their dinner table is because that first thanksgiving dinner was not held in Indiana.
DUCKS HATE INDIANA!

We had my in-laws' Thanksgiving celebration last Thursday. I brought pork loin. After the meal, several people asked how I had cooked that turkey!

Mama decided she had to do a turkey after all! So she went to Fresh Thyme and got one of their fresh turkeys. She watched some videos and stuffed it with onions, carrots, celery, apples and lemons! Rubbed it with an assortment of herbs that she read about online! I just started to carve it and did a quick taste test! Oh yeah! Pretty good!
