NFAA National Indoor Shoot Report by Jim C
NFAA National Indoor Shoot included crossbows this year- now all three NFAA owned major indoor tournaments recognize the xbow division-Las Vegas added them several years ago while what was once known as Atlantic City has had them for ages.
They put us on the end of the venue by the bow storage on Morrell bales that had a foam front-worked really well. we had plenty of room and when we shot sunday, we didn't have any other archers on that 10 or so target section. This was my first national level shoot but 55+X national champion and multiple world champion Carol Pelosi said the venue was good.
Most of us shot 8AM saturday morning. Carol got the first NFAA official national 300 with 40X. US #2 man Joe Silvasi-still rehabing after being the victim of a car wreck and 6 busted discs had a 4 in the first end but shot well to finish with 299. Crossbow stock maker Mike Gough shot 297 while Ron Kreshesky (US #8) and yours truly had 295's. That afternoon long time xbow craftsman and recent World Senior 4th place finisher Stan Pennypacker set the NFAA record with 52X. The next morning we all shot together. My back was a bit out of sorts and my focus sucked but Joe Silvasi had a nice 300 while Saturday's two clean shooters each dropped a point early on. Stan's 599 102X edged Joe's 599 94X to win the first NFAA indoor while Carol's 599 took ladies (there were no other women-with the word of mouth of this tournament being good we expect a bunch more next year). Mike (the results on the NFAA website are WRONG-they somehow lost ten of his points) took third and Ron beat me by three points on Sunday.
Friday night practice saw numerous people stopping by and asking questions about the xbows. CHPRO (Jeff Button-former world field champion and all round nice guy) took a few shots out of my Australian contender (four of us were shooting contenders-Stan and Carol were shooting bows Stan made)-yes I believe he scored an X on his first shot. Former FITA team gold medalist and this years Lady Limited Freestyle National Champion XXXBOWHO (Aya LaBrie) also came by and shot a bit with Mike's Contender. Aya has shot some crossbow at the range my wife used to run and we hope she may join us in some of the indoor tournaments on the line (Jeff-you are welcome too)
Jeff-no stranger to top level compound competition-shot my bow well but noted that it was harder to hold steady than his Merlin target compounds.
I have shot in dozens of indoor shoots (50 or so recurve-18 or so crossbow) and this is one of the best you can go to.
