Have not heard a shot at big oaks plus have not seen a deer. Game warden at big oaks National Wildlife Refuge said they had confirmed cases of EHD and found dead deer

Have not heard a shot at big oaks plus have not seen a deer. Game warden at big oaks National Wildlife Refuge said they had confirmed cases of EHD and found dead deer That's too bad. That place doesn't need anymore help at cutting deer numbers. Great place for chance at a quality deer, but not quantity.

It still amazes me the number of hunters each year that have never been there before. It is a place you either hate or love that’s for sure. There are still some big bucks in there but can be a hard place to figure out.

Big Oaks is beautiful place up on the north end. We have seen river otter, beaver, flying squirrels, and bald eagles. Amazing wildlife and huge trees to see besides just deer.

Full disclosure...I I know nothing about Big Oaks other than it’s big and I have zero interest in going there. Other than possible disease, why the low deer population? I’d assume that with the size of the property and controlled hunting that the population would be flourishing. I also gather that the habitat is very good. A co-worker went a few weeks ago and saw nothing but other hunters. He’d never been before and went in completely blind with a cousin.

Now to get a 2nd buck tag an antlerless has to be checked in first. It really got the herd numbers in check and the deer are healthier

That rule been in place for at least 5 year! Second buck requires a antlers less check in.
As it should be.... IMO

Shot a doe and missed a buck. First deer with the 350 legend. How did it preform? She only ran 20 yards, but she didn't leave much blood. Not sure if it was the projectile or the shot location.
