I usually cut the tail off a harvested deer each year or snatch one off a road kill buck. I hang them off my buck decoy to add a little realism. I neglected to do so last year so I ordered one off of eBay. And boy does it stink! Stiff as a board too. I usually tan mine and they're nice and pliable.
I've had it hanging outside for a couple weeks now but I'm still worried about the odor. Does anyone have any suggestions? I thought about putting it in a box with a bunch of leaves, grass, etc....

My guess the center cartridge is rotting. I would try to tan it. The hair might fall out.

Is it a chemical smell or rotten flesh smell?

It's a rotten smell.

Hoping it's not as strong now. Maybe it was so potent because it was in a sealed bag?

I'd split the tail all the way to the end, scrape out anything that isn't hide and soak it in 50/50 borax and Arm & Hammer Baking soda.

Borax or baking soda then introduce desired scent

I'll beat nfalls116 to it. You can get skunk essence at trappers supply houses, you can spray that on the tail to cover the bad "rot" smell.
