I have a question for the experienced muzzleloader hunters: Since I hope to kill 2 seer still, if I were to shoot a buck or doe with the muzzleloader, would I then have to tear it down and clean it before hunting again, or could I swab it with a spit patch, and load it back up for the remainder of the season and hunt, then clean it after the muzzleloader season ends? I`m shooting 777 pellets, which 777 is supposedly not quite as corrosive as the other propellants. Which would be be? Clean after shooting once, or swab the barrel with a spit patch and hunt until the end of the season? You need to find out prior to the season how your gun shoots on a fouled bore, as opposed to a clean one. When I was shooting that crap, I took apart and cleaned after EVERY shot during the season. Breech plug out and all. I hated it. Now shooting clean burning in smokeless guns.

Got decent groups with it, and yes, I used a spit patch between shots, so I`m good to go that way, I do know that it shoots ok after the first shot with a spit patch swab. I just don`t know if leaving it basically dirty, other than a spit patch down the barrel will make it incredibly dirtier and more difficult to clean if I leave it in that condition for an additional week before I really tear it down and clean it properly.

I wouldnt think it would change. But, I no longer take my guns in/out of the house during the season in an effort to eliminate condensation or rust. Best way to find out is do it NOW in actual conditions. Thay way YOU know for sure, not what some internet cowboy says.
Gee, I always wanted to be a cowboy. Lol 🤠 Giddy up.

Ranch was a bust today. Cattle all throughout the creek bottom for the entire length of the property. In reality I can't get too upset as it is a working cattle ranch and we were just given last minute access as a kindness but MAN it is a bummer. I ended up SURROUNDED about an hour before dark by cows.....literally. I will try to post some pics in a bit. One more day to go....wish me luck.

Our garage is unheated and so, I leave the muzzleloader out there in between hunts and don`t bring it inside the house for exactly the reason I don`t want to risk condensation. I really dislike cleaning the muzzleloader, and as I`ve been writing here, and know that I`ve printed pretty good targets by swabbing the bore between shots, I guess I likely can hunt with it the next two weekends even if I shoot it.

If you do a heavy clean I would fire a primer only shot just to make sure any residue was dried up.
Personally I just do a light clean and make sure nipple was clean.

If I ever reloaded on a dirty barrel when using BP or subs, I would hunt the rest of the day and then shoot that load out and clean that evening. I never left any powder residue in my barrel longer than that if it was remotely corrosive.

I've done the whole leave the muzzle loader loaded (without primer) the whole season. I've also done seasons where I brought it in and out of the house or leave it in the cold the whole season.
I'm not doing that anymore. I replaced that muzzle loader. I will twist the breach plug off with my hand and push the load out Everytime if I don't shoot it. Muzzleloader will go into house every night and a light cleaning will be done after warm up.
I went to the range and found a good load pattern and found 3 shots held well before needing cleaned. The 4th shot was rough to load. And was only slightly off but still a kill shot. Reality is barrel will be cleaned and one shot will be taken while in the field.
Found that the Christmas hooks for glass ornaments fit through the breech plug. But I suggest if you forego cleaning after one shot do fire a cap before loading again before you set out to hunt.

Snow really picking up now. Can only see about 78-80yds thru the woods. Between that, the wind, and bitter cold, this boy ain't gonna take much more. Well, that and a brisket on the smoker at home ain't helping anything.😋

If I do reload it will be because I had it in the rain. And leave your gun in the garage car or barn. Never bring it back inside the house After hunting and it’s still loaded.

Trying my old reduction zone spot tonight. Rarely hunt there anymore due to traffic and the urban sprawl. Still outside city limit, so gun is ok, just got tired of constant horn blowing and vehicles stopping by mine, not knowing what they were doing. Gonna give her a shot again.

One of the last times I hunted there, my truck got rear ended and totalled out. It's also where I took my biggest buck. So lots of memories, both good and bad! Off to the races now!
