As a professional diesel mechanic for 17.5yrs, auto mechanic for 5yrs prior, and shade tree mechanic for longer than that, it's a tough question for me. I see a lot of guys have a combo tool, or Leatherman type on their belt, or a flashlight. But I would say I use a pocket knife every single day of my life, no matter work or home. I use and ABUSE my knives 10 times more than they were ever designed for. Probably why I started collecting knives. Lol. I break them, bend them, arc them, whatever. But, I always repair and resharpen them back to life. The blades on my work and home knives are at about 75% of size from what they started as. I carry different knives for different times. Work knife, garage knife, everyday knife, dress fancy knife, showpiece knife like for holidays or parties. I got it covered, lol.

Jbird if you have to resort to a torch you just never had a big enough hammer is my guess Sometimes you don't have the access with a big enough hammer! I have everything from small tack hammers to large framing hammers to black smith hammers to a splitting maul/sledge hammer. And sometimes....you still just better off with the torch! Either heat it up or just cut it off....especially if your replacing it any way. Don;t get me wrong....I love a good hammer. But sometimes knowing when to put down the hammer and pick up the smoke wrench can save a lot of time, energy and frustration.

A good multi-tool is great as well. I carry one and have for a long time. My kids call it Dad's "Handy dandy fix the $hit out of anything tool". For general purpose type stuff it's pretty handy...pliers some screw drivers, a knife blade or two, bottle opener, and who all knows what else.
A good sturdy, sharp knife is great as well. It's funny how few people carry a knife anymore. You wasn't a "man" when I was a kid until your Dad, Uncle or Grand Dad gave you your first case or old timer folding pocket knife...and you cut yourself with it! We used to carry them to school and the like and nobody thought anything of it....now they would treat you like some sort of terrorist!

Interesting .... I can't stand those multi tools. They are typically kind of crappy pliers, crappy screw drivers, crappy knifes, crappy wire cutters, etc. Better than nothing but not good at anything, also darned bulky to carry.
I'm never without a pocket knife, so after rethinking it is my most needed and used tool.
