Well it happened. I bought a two seater ladder stand for my son to hunt with me this year. I put it together and only had the first ladder section attached (6-8 feet high) and propped it up against a tree in out back yard to test it out. A tight ratchet strap and ready to go. I had it up for a few weeks and he and I would practice a few nights just trying the ladder, 3 pts of contact and standing and sitting with him. I didn't know the tree I had it on was dying and one night I climbed up and the bark on the tree had broke loose at the teeth and it swung or twisted on the tree spilling me off the side. I didn't have a harness on, it was only 8 feet, I climb higher ladders at work. I learned a lesson. When I fell I twisted my ankle landing and destroyed it. Broke my fibula from the tendons tearing and have had 2 screws put in my ankle. Doctor said it was like my ankle was loose when those tendons and ligaments were stretched. 8 weeks...no walking. This happened August 1st so I see the surgeon again next week to get this cast off and hopefully start weight bearing. I've always been concerned for my neck or back falling from a tree and never thought 8 feet could do this kind of damage. Just wanted to post and give a reminder that it can happen even when I thought it would never happen to me. I always wear one and have a life line in my acctual hunting stands and here I get hurt in my own damn back yard! I hope everyone has a safe and successful season. Wear those lifesavers and even if you think it's not high enough for a harness, you can still have an injury that leaves you not working or hunting for weeks. Or worse your out in the feild with an injury where you cant walk back to the truck and need immediate medical attention. I learned quick that even a "short" fall can have big consequences. Be safe everyone!

Bad new brother. I hope your ankle heels 100%. Great point it only takes a few feet especially as we get older. Not very pliable as the younger years. 2nd that, safety is number 1 and if not make it #1. Hopefully you and your son will be able to hunt. Might need to go ground blind.

The older you get the more you realize you don't need to be up in a tree to kill a deer. With all the time and money the industry has spent designing tree stands just imagine what kind of ground blinds they could come up with if they wanted to.
Sorry to hear of your injury and I hope you heal 100%.

Thanks all! Yea I have a fear of stands now and will be on the ground this year. I fear a light fall could injure it again. No heights for me.

Sorry to hear about your mishap.
The older I get the less time I spend in the air. Back in the day, it was nothing to be 30 feet up on a lok on limit with no safety equipment.
Now, I spend the vast majority of my time in elevated blinds, ground blinds and tripod stands. We still have a few ladder stands that we hunt out of but that's the extent of my "stand hunting" anymore.
Hope you heal quickly and best of luck this season.

Wow, sorry to hear it. Hope you get healed back up.
I worry about stands every year. I enjoy my homemade gillie suit more and more.

You had no indication a tree in your back yard was dying? The bark never slipped when you were setting it up improperly? It sucks that it happened but it sounds like it was preventable.

Sorry to hear. My buddy fell off a 4 foot step stool and landed wrong. Five screws in his broken heel. Will live with a limp for the rest of his life. Hope you both are able to get out and lay one down. Good luck!

Dang it buddy. Hope you heal up well. I had straps break on my hang on last year as I stepped off the climbing stick on to the stand, didn't fall to the ground but did get scraped up catching myself on the climbing stick....went to all ladder stands this year after realizing at 50 years old I don't heal up as fast as I did when I was younger.

I am actually going to be doing a podcast on tree stand safety, would you be willing to take a short second and share your story for others to learn from? Could be anonymous if desired. If willing private message me.

Just hung a ladder stand yesterday by myself. Kinda stupid being 60 with no one there in case something went wrong.

I still don’t wear a harness at 59 I walk roofs trusses ceiling joist every day almost I swear I put a harness on and I get worried about falling or tripping over one. Someday it may cost me but I fill safer with out one.
If you look most of you new homes that have high roofs have tie offs on them right at the peak it’s code now around here anyway they leave them on even after the home is done

Maybe with all the down time you can study up on the life cycle of deciduous trees. 😉

Sorry to hear about your accident urbanguy, I hope you have a full recovery. If you will allow me to post a link to a video showing the force created when a person falls from just 6 ft. I use my fall protection at work any given time that I need it. I also use it while hunting in my stands along with a life line. I recently attended a saftey class for fall protection, I along with others are the one's that inspect all the harnesses in our area, here is one of the videos they showed in class. www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0rlrlWnvYl
