I’ve always used the powder that comes with the dead down wind kits. Been watching a lot of hunting vids on YouTube and the guys on there use milkweed. Anybody uses milkweed to indicate wind? I’m curious when does the pods start popping up around here?

You have to wait until the pods are brown and dried up. You might have to wait until late Oct/early Nov for that.

I use it, I’ve got a old film container I stuff full when it’s in season. Got it all season then.

The milkweed is better than powder.
I’ve dropped milkweed and it would start out one direction but before it landed it switched 180 degrees in direction.

I use them too. Unlike powder that vanishes quicky, you can watch the milk weed for a long time. You can even watch it glide along in the morning as thermals rise.
I take an entire pod with me and keep it in my jacket. But, I like the film/medicine bottle idea.

Best wind indicator around that’s for sure and it’s free. I have a bag full of it. Good to go for a while, but will grab more when I see it.

I use them all the time. Pods are formed now....just got to pick a few when you find them ready (store them in a small zip-lock bag). The interesting thing with them is that they stay on the wind at a distance from your stand. As such if there is an unseen current 30 yards from your stand for some reason it's much easier to see that. Especially with thermals and the like. The bottles of powder tell you what is happening right where you are sitting....but not 30 yards or more away.....and that can mean a lot.

I like the days when the milkweed silk seeds forever fall within 10 yards or so. I know it's going to be a good day for hunting. When you can hear them coming.
